Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter volunteering on a Habitat for Humanity construction project in New York City in 1984... In September 1984, marking their very first project with Habitat for Humanity (which launched what became the annual Jimmy Carter Work Project). They worked side-by-side with volunteers and future homeowners to rehabilitate and renovate multi-family housing for families in need of affordable homes. . . . In 1984, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter arrived at a rundown building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Three years earlier, they had lived in the White House. Now they were there to help renovate apartments for families who needed affordable housing. There were no presidential duties waiting for them, no state dinners or official ceremonies. They had come to work. Jimmy was 59. Rosalynn was 57. After his defeat in the 1980 election, the couple had returned to Georgia and begun reimagining what their lives could become. Their involvement with Habitat for Humanity would provide part of the answer. The organization brought volunteers and future homeowners together to build and improve affordable housing. In New York, the Carters joined a team renovating a six-story building, launching what became the annual Jimmy Carter Work Project. It was an unusual second act for a former president, but Rosalynn was far more than a supportive wife standing beside him. During her years as first lady, she had attended Cabinet meetings, represented the United States abroad, and become a leading advocate for mental health reform. She had never been content with a purely ceremonial role. The construction projects offered another way to serve. Over the following decades, Jimmy and Rosalynn worked alongside volunteers and homeowners in communities across the United States and abroad. Their presence helped turn a relatively small housing organization into an internationally recognized cause. They continued participating as they grew older, sometimes working in the heat, sometimes in difficult conditions, but always drawing attention to the families who would eventually live in the homes. Their marriage endured for 77 years, one of the longest in presidential history. Rosalynn died in November 2023 at 96. Jimmy died in December 2024 at 100. By then, their work with Habitat for Humanity had helped build, renovate, or repair thousands of homes. The photographs from those early projects remain especially moving. A former president and first lady, dressed for construction work, standing among volunteers instead of dignitaries. After reaching the highest office in the country, they spent decades helping other people find a place to call home. #archaeohistories

In September 1957, 14-year-old Jimi Hendrix couldn't afford the $1.50 admission fee to see Elvis Presley at Sick's Stadium in Seattle, so he managed to watch the show from a hill near the venue. The experience had such a profound impact on him that he wrote down all the songs he heard that night, and two months later, at age 15, he drew this color sketch of Elvis with his guitar. The following year, in the summer of 1958, his father bought him his first acoustic guitar for just five dollars. Hendrix practiced obsessively, and shortly thereafter joined his first formal band, The Velvetones, the first step on a path that would ultimately completely redefine the way electric guitar is played in rock music.

Paul Nowak, "The national minimum wage is £12.71 an hour" "Nobody on this panel is on £12.71 an hour" "And I think it is right that we are looking to increase people's wages" "Why? When low paid members get a pay rise, what do they do, they go out and spend it in local shops and local restaurants" "They don't squirrel it away in offshore bank accounts" My view: For someone earning the least, a pay rise can mean putting the heating on without worrying, buying fresh food, or getting through the month without borrowing. That matters in its own right. People deserve more than a lifetime of work spent barely scraping by. There is an economic value too. When household budgets have been stretched to breaking point, extra income helps meet needs that have gone unmet. That spending supports other people’s jobs and gives local businesses customers who can afford to walk through the door. We spend so much time asking whether the economy can afford to pay people more. We should also ask what it costs us to keep so many people poor.

Picton Reading Room, Liverpool. One of the finest civic spaces in the country. A proper Victorian municipal sanctuary on William Brown Street, still doing exactly what Sir James Picton intended nearly 150 years ago. When this circular masterpiece opened in 1879, it was the first public building in Liverpool, and almost certainly the first library in the country, to be lit by electricity. But being pragmatic Victorians, they laid on a full gas supply to the room just in case the newfangled electric lighting proved unreliable or inadequate.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison with George's first car, a blue Ford Anglia, registration 935 MPF, on a golf course driveway in south Liverpool in 1962. Captured by Paul's younger brother, Mike McCartney. George bought the car from Terry Doran, a salesman at Hawthorne Motors in Warrington and a friend of Brian Epstein. In exchange for good terms, George agreed to pose with John and Paul for a dealership ad, which ran in the local paper Mersey Beat in July 1962. The Beatles were still a club band then, splitting their time between the Cavern and Hamburg. That August, Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best on drums, and in October "Love Me Do" came out. Doran stayed in the Beatles' circle for years and later worked for Apple. John died in 1980 and George in 2001. 🎸 Within months the Beatles released "Love Me Do." Which early Beatles song is your favorite? 🎸

On this day 53 years ago, Ringo Starr released his self-titled album in the United States 🎶 🥁 'Ringo' became the first project since the Beatles’ break-up to feature contributions from John, Paul, George and Ringo, although the four did not perform together. John wrote “I’m the Greatest”, Paul contributed “Six O’Clock”, and George helped create “Photograph”, “Sunshine Life for Me” and “You and Me (Babe)” 🌟 This is the only non-Beatles album to feature all four Beatles writing and performing on the same record - it seems Ringo could always bring the boys together! ✨ The album also produced three American Top Five singles, including the number ones “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen”, giving Ringo one of the greatest successes of his solo career 🏆 #ringostarr #ringo #thebeatles #beatles

Scouser Peter Ellis designed Oriel Chambers on Water Street, Liverpool in 1864. It's famous for its early metal frame and glass walls, which was the forerunner to all the glass and metal skyscrapers you see around the world today. Blame him😀 People praise the design today, but early critics hated it. One magazine called it a giant pile of glass bubbles - and that's just one of the milder insults. The cast-iron windows were not just a bold style choice. They let sunlight fill the rooms before electric lights existed. Offices and streets slowly gained electric power in the 1880s.
