So many people taking about "writing for the love of the game" as if that's at all sustainable for a fan COMMUNITY. It's 100% understandable to be sad that you're getting locked out of conversations and treated like a Content Producer instead of a fellow fan to yap with.

Ao3 donations are around $200k a year iirc. FB costs around $8M a month to run.
A site like Ao3 with as much data as it has running on $200k is kind of a miracle and makes sense why it needs so much maintenance.

One thing that does irk me about fan responses to Ao3 being down, and not just this particular time, is the emphasis on how they cannot go without their bedtime fanfics but the majority of readers do not give their favorite fics or writers the engagement they deserve.

i really don't think we should be mass-sharing epubs of fanfic, man. even though it's public, it just seems rude and inconsiderate to take the distribution away from writers like that. go to your favourite authors' social medias and politely ask if they'd be willing to share.

it is incredibly grotesque that people will act like they're wasting away without their nice little bedtime stories but turn seething and nasty toward fic writers as soon as they try to set boundaries about the distribution of their work. you are not very nice people

put it this way: i'm a fanartist, and i'm totally alright with people printing my fanart out for their personal enjoyment. i would not be okay with someone printing out 200 copies of my fanart to hand out for free at an event without my permission or knowledge.

Its like an insanely popular site that has millions in traffic each year with an incomprehensible ammount of data stored in almost 20 years of operation may cost a bit to keep up, or something
ao3 has got to be money laundering cause that site should not be held together by sticks and glue like it is when they get millions in donations every year
