🟡 NEW: NCAA President Charlie Baker: College sports bill means less ‘money on lawyers,’ more on athletics

I can’t imagine what a college sports fan is going through with all this chaos. I know how challenging it is to be a coach and a player. Everyone knows my stance on the bipartisan PCSA bill in Congress. It’s not perfect, and there are things I don’t like about it, but it’s desperately needed to protect young American athletes and will solve the problems that now threaten the future of college sports.
We’re all tired of eligibility lawsuits in different states, different rules and different outcomes. The PCSA will solve that problem once and for all.
Under the PCSA, eligibility disputes would be adjudicated in federal court – not a hometown state court – and we would get protections and fairness for American 17, 18, 19 year old kids and double the amount of direct rev share payments from schools, which includes retention money.
One national standard. No thumb on the scale. Players First!

Statement on the Protect College Sports Act from NCAA President Charlie Baker:
"After speaking with conference leaders and university presidents in recent days, one thing is clear: there is overwhelming consensus that targeted intervention from Congress is necessary. I am grateful to Senators Cruz and Cantwell for making meaningful changes to strengthen this bill.
This is the legislation we need now. It will grant student-athletes unprecedented academic, health, and wellness benefits, rein in out-of-control agents, and stabilize transfer, eligibility, and revenue-sharing rules.
While no bill is perfect, I implore college sports leaders and Senators to support this bill now. It is our best chance to deliver the benefits and level playing field student-athletes deserve while providing the protections institutions need to sustain college athletics long-term."

JP will still be calling NWSL and other things. But for a legend World Cup broadcaster to take time and help me as some random college student impacted me in ways I can never repay.
Congratulations on a wonderful run, JP is forever the Godfather of American soccer broadcast.

Today's vote is a powerful statement to the growing bipartisan support for targeted intervention from Congress to stabilize college sports' transfer, eligibility and agent rules. The @NCAA looks forward to building on this important development to pass the most effective bill for all 550,000 student-athletes. In the coming days, the NCAA will provide member schools and student-athletes with analysis of the latest draft of the legislation and next steps. We are thankful for all of the advocacy from student-athletes and members schools and for the leadership of Senators Cruz, Cantwell, Coons and Schmitt.

The @NCAA has made long overdue changes to its rules, modernizing college sports and delivering real results for student-athletes across the country. Today, DI student-athletes receive $1billion in financial benefits, billions more in scholarships. Additionally, the NCAA now mandates access to health, wellness and educational benefits like guaranteed scholarships.
Thanks to these reforms, the investments of all 1,100 schools, and the support of coaches, educators and trainers, the future for the 550,000 student-athletes competing today is bright and getting even brighter.
We must do all we can to safeguard the opportunities of this uniquely American system for the next generation of student-athletes. Every sports league needs rules, and there are certain challenges to NCAA rules that only Congress can address. The bipartisan Protect College Sports Act’s sections bolstering eligibility, transfer and agent policies are needed now to deliver on that obligation.
As a former governor, I understand that getting important legislation done requires compromise. While the bill does not address every issue college sports face, the current state of play cannot continue, and we must move the bill forward. I look forward to working alongside our student-athlete leaders and all 1,100 schools to advance this bill and make changes to ensure it’s as effective as possible.

USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

There is no better example of why targeted intervention from Congress is necessary. When you have schools and deep-pocketed supporters willing to look the other way on the glaring integrity threat of betting on your own team - and judges whose rulings effectively strip away our ability to stop them - only Congress can equip the @NCAA to apply this common sense rule to everyone fairly and consistently. The Protect College Sports Act would empower the NCAA to enforce rules including the gambling restrictions - it's needed now more than ever.
Mark Jones retweeted
This is completely false - the NCAA has no commercial partnership with any sportsbook and the NCAA prohibits betting ads during all broadcasts.
"To keep [Brendan Sorsby] out from the whole season I think is wrong."
@finebaum shares his thoughts on the NCAA denying Brendan Sorsby's request to be reinstated 🏈

The bipartisan SCORE Act ensures college sports are for college athletes, not a safety net for professional players - so while student-athlete leaders across all three divisions support the bill, it is no surprise a handful of pros are opposed.
