BREAKING NEWS
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announces national car park loyalty scheme.
His statement- "I know many motorists are finding it financially difficult to run their vehicles at the moment. I'm a motorist too, so I get it. I will not accept there is nothing I can do to offer help to those who need it.
So from 1st January 2027 I will be introducing a car park loyalty scheme. It's free to join and will immediately provide motorists with the opportunity to save money when parking their cars.
By simply registering online with your name, your home address, your phone number, your email address, the vehicle registration number, the VIN number, the vehicle make and model, your driving licence number, a copy of your insurance policy and details of your entire family and anyone else you may know, (including the names of your pets - but excluding goldfish), you will be able to get a free parking session for every 40 paid tickets you download to the website.
This will save the average household £3.78 per year and is another example of @UKLabour being on your side when times get tough.
I am determined to make life easier for you. You can register for this initiative on absolutelyshitideasfromburnh…
I'm here to help.
Your friend, Andy".

Simulate driving an EV by limiting yourself to putting £20 of petrol in, each time you stop.
Then proceeding to walk around the Shell Shop aimlessly for 45 minutes before paying.
The experience is almost identical.

I can’t stop laughing at this example the government used to justify what they’re doing in the Magistrates’ Courts 😂
Don’t worry. If the Magistrates REVERSE THE ACTUAL BURDEN OF PROOF then you’ll likely have an appeal. Fear not. All is well. Nothing to worry about.

WARNING Under proposals before House of Commons the Government wants to be granted power to extend the scope of Judge-only trials to other forms of complex cases at their discretion.
This is important.
The removal of the right to trial by jury remains under threat.
The power to widen that removal to many serious criminal offences would be granted to the executive by a SI.
Please share with your MPs.
This is being debated TODAY at the report stage and from 230pm at the third reading of the Courts and Tribunal Bill.
This is what our Chair Andrew Thomas KC has to say:

There’ll be chat tomorrow about increasing the sentencing powers of Magistrates to TWO years.
This is, in a crowded field, a monumentally awful idea.
But don’t take it from me - here’s what the Justice Committee made of it 👇🏼

Last year over 40,000 Magistrates trials cancelled while a record 89 defendants died waiting for trials yet Govt thinks adding 25,000 more cases to the Magistrates’ Courts will help victims of crime.
Is this Govt motivated more by cost cutting than cutting case flow + delay?

Helen Whately Faces Hypocrisy Claims Over MP Expenses and Welfare Post
2 hours ago
Whately, the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, posted about restoring fairness to the welfare system by making work pay better than benefits. Users pointed to her expense claims, including nearly £2 million since 2015 and £300,000 for travel and accommodation despite living just 50 miles from Westminster in Faversham. In 2024-25 alone, she claimed £269,510, with £25,062 on accommodation and over £225,000 on staffing.

This story is quite incredible, and very concerning:
Sir Ranulph Fiennes was “unlawfully deprived of his liberty” when his wife placed him in a care home, a watchdog concluded.
The retired explorer has not been seen in public for two years, and The Telegraph has learnt that he has been placed in a succession of care homes under a false name by his wife, Louise Millington-Cotes, who put strict conditions on how he was to be looked after.
Friends have become concerned for his welfare, saying Mrs Millington-Cotes is refusing to let them visit him or tell them where he is.
Now it has emerged that the owner of one of the care homes where Sir Ranulph, 82, has lived reported a number of concerns about his wellbeing to the relevant authorities and even contacted the police.

This is a very disappointing response that does little to help the millions of students already struggling with student loans! My view on the govt's reponse today to the Treasury Committee student loan report...
---------------
This is a very disappointing response that does little to help the millions of students already struggling with student loans, after years of degradation of the terms they signed up to, by successive governments. Most urgently, it doesn’t address the coming immoral freeze of the Plan 2 repayment threshold, announced by Rachel Reeves, due to start next April.
That will mean all those on Plan 2 loans will effectively pay more each year. I say it’s immoral because it is a negative retrospective change of terms to loan contracts students, often aged 18, signed up to. No commercial firm would ever be allowed to do that. The only slim hope is that as the freeze was announced in a Budget, it has to be undone in a Budget and therefore they are just waiting for the coming one to do that.
At the same time, the Government has sadly rejected the Committee’s recommendation that the ‘fairness’ protections that holders of commercial loans get should apply to student loans too - perhaps as it knows some of the ways it behaves would fall foul of those conditions.
Most frustrating is that back in 2015, I campaigned for this change, and even worked with current Cabinet Minister, Wes Streeting, then a backbencher, to put an amendment in Parliament (it failed). So, it is incredibly frustrating to see a government he is now a part of reject it.
The Government has also rejected shifting the inflation link from RPI to CPI - continuing the unfair pattern that means when the Government raises our costs by inflation it’s often via the higher RPI, but on things where it pays out it’s often linked to the lower CPI measure.
Of course, I welcome the small crumbs it has given that at least future students will be told in plain English, before they sign up, that the amount they repay can be altered after the event. But let’s be clear: better information for future students will not fix the existing Plan 2 student loan crisis. The repayment threshold needs to rise, interest needs to fall, maintenance support needs uprating, and the whole system requires a fundamental reset.
