Anne Carson offers a great deal of pleasure to the reader. I always have new ideas when I read her work. Even the conservative may find nourishment. A shame to deny yourself.
Maybe I'm wrong, but in my experience the problem in urban public schools is less that "teachers have given up" and more that they are working with weak systems and bad ideas. The idea that "research shows homework has no benefit," for example, is incorrect.
I like this homework discourse. A reminder that we really do not agree on some of the most basic elements of schooling.
The next day, there is a 5-minute quiz on the basic questions at the start of class. It is graded by partners and handed in. Then, there is a discussion about the juicier question. It is lively. Students who failed the quiz do not participate; they do their homework.
