The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which electrons are ejected from a material-typically a metal-when it is exposed to light of a certain frequency.
Albert Einstein explained it in 1905 by proposing that light behaves as discrete packets of energy called photons. If the photon’s energy is greater than the material’s work function (the energy needed to release an electron), the electron is emitted.
This effect provided key evidence for the quantum nature of light and earned Einstein the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.
