Sir: In his article 'The warmongers' (24 October) Peter Hitchens is too extraordinary. In fact, General Sir Roland Walker is absolutely right to emphasise the threat from Russia. That is his job, especially when what he says is entirely in line with all the warnings from our Nato allies.
The abject failure of Sir Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham to do so makes it even more essential, especially when one remembers how in the mid-1930s both British and French governments avoided alerting their own countries to the threat.
For Hitchens to write of 'stoking war with Russia' puts him in the Donald Trump school of logic, pretending that Vladimir Putin, the shameless aggressor in Ukraine, is a 'humanitarian', no doubt adding to his reputation from Chechnya and Syria.

Elon Musk ADMITTED SpaceX throttled Starlink internet access in Ukraine. And new reporting raises serious questions about whether the Starlink outage was used to squeeze more money out of U.S. taxpayers.
If true, we’re talking about a trillionaire potentially committing a federal crime to enrich himself. Worth an inquiry, don’t you think?

Hailing Orbán or Vučić for not shedding blood to keep power doesn't mean they wouldn't if they thought they could get away with it. Putin is what happens when an autocrat is entrenched. Trump's return despite his Jan 6 insurrection is what happens when there's no accountability.

International sport is a cesspool of greed and appeasement of authoritarians. Sportswashing is a useful lever for some of the worst regimes in the world. It’s never "just sports" for them. It’s propaganda and normalization.

Back in the "vegetarian years" of Putin's rising dictatorship, a critical outlet like Novaya Gazeta was allowed to exist as sop to the educated and the foreign appeasers who held it up as proof Russia wasn't authoritarian. As with so much else since the war, the masks are off.
"They killed us." Novaya Gazeta, the venerable investigative Russian newspaper whose reporting staff included the slain Anna Politkovskaya and at least five others who were killed or died under suspicious circumstances, announced it was shutting down.

Putin is not a "humanitarian."
Putin is a killer.
Trump's pivot to help him and abandon Ukrainians is one of the worst U.S. policy decisions ever.
It needs to be reversed.

Yesterday, russia killed 21 innocent civilians, including children.
Today, the Pentagon is calling on people to “cool their rhetoric on russia.”
So the problem isn’t russia killing children.
The problem is people speaking too loudly about it?

The Trump administration is pressuring Lithuania to open the port of Klaipėda for the transshipment of potash fertilizers from Belarus—despite existing EU sanctions. This is reported by *Politico*.
▪️ The Trump administration is urging Lithuania to open one of its key Baltic Sea ports for the export of potash fertilizers from Belarus, disregarding European sanctions. The U.S. aims to reduce its reliance on Canada for this essential fertilizer component and lower costs for American farmers.
▪️ According to four European officials, John Cole, the U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus, has spent the last few weeks sounding out Lithuanian diplomats on whether the blockade on Belarusian goods could be eased. This blockade is part of broader European sanctions against the government of self-proclaimed president Lukashenko.
▪️ The collapse of trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada in August, combined with new rounds of reciprocal tariffs, has prompted the U.S. administration to seek potash fertilizer supplies from Belarus—a country that controls approximately 20% of the global market. This comes against the backdrop of Trump’s efforts to ease sanctions on Russia and its allies, in the hope of persuading Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. These plans are meeting with significant resistance in Europe.
“They are applying polite pressure, but our answer is clear: ‘Absolutely not!’” “If the Americans cannot learn from history, then we must stand firm,” an Eastern European official told the outlet.
▪️ Two Eastern European officials stated that Cole has been exerting pressure at all levels of the Lithuanian government for over a year—ever since the U.S. envoy’s first visit to Minsk.
▪️ Another Eastern European official noted that the U.S. has long been discussing whether Belarusian potash could reach the global market via Klaipėda or other Baltic Sea ports—such as Riga, the capital of Latvia. This would offer a more straightforward transport route than the one passing through Russia. One of the European officials confirmed that Cole has also approached his Latvian counterparts regarding this matter.

Why doesn’t Kushner ask Russia to stop bombing cities? Shopping malls, hospitals, passenger trains, gas stations are all being targeted.
“Kushner told Zelensky that he should pause the strikes because he and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff were dedicating a lot of time, energy, and jet fuel to mediating with Moscow, one of the U.S. officials said. A 30-day pause on refineries would be a way for Ukraine to show gratitude, that U.S. official said.”
An almost comical thing to tell a nation fighting for its existence. Lay down your weapons because we are exhausted from taking a private jet.
