Billy Strings' dad played him Black Sabbath when he was about 7, and he said it 'scared the shit out of me.' Before bluegrass, he played in a metal band as a teenager. Here he is dressed as He-Man at his Masters of the Universe-themed Halloween show in Baltimore, 10/31/26, playing 'Symptom of the Universe' live for the first time. The 1975 Sabotage riff is often called a blueprint for thrash metal.

"Kashmir" isn't about Kashmir. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics after an endless drive through the Moroccan desert, thousands of miles from the place it's named after. None of the band had ever been there. Page called it the greatest Zeppelin riff he ever wrote. Here's Led Zeppelin playing it at Earls Court, 1975.

“Lip Service,” performed live by EC and the Attractions in '77. That year marked the beginning of Costello’s live performances with the Attractions, a period documented through early recordings on ‘Becoming The Attractions’, disc 4 of ‘My Aim Is True (49th Anniversary Edition)’.

Doc Watson invented the idea of the guitar as a lead instrument in bluegrass. Decades later, Billy Strings carries that torch, and you can hear it here. His cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice” follows Doc’s arrangement, note for note. The flatpicking lineage, alive and well.

It’s not the Led Zeppelin of 1969 anymore. But Robert Plant, 78, is still out there giving the songs new life. Here he is in San Francisco last week, reworking “Ramble On,” the classic he famously packed with Lord of the Rings references, Mordor and Gollum woven right into the lyrics. Long may he ramble on.
