Alex Karp before vs after the midterms
Palantir CEO Alex Karp: It literally does not matter which political party is in power—Palantir will win either way "We've done well under both parties." "Our products are superior. We stand by their superiority, and both parties recognize that we have the best products." Via @CNBC

The sanguine, Adult-in-the-Room, "you win some you lose some, things come and go, we'll be back, we always are, nothing's permanent" attitude is a luxury belief that only makes sense in an ethnically, culturally homogenous society, btw

I like to say that the province of religion is to experiment on timelines beyond a single human lifespan All we can do is trust in Providence and pray for forgiveness

What Do the Boomers Really Believe? Not what they say at dinner. What they believe in the dark, deep in the soul, where a generation keeps the story it tells about itself. Every civilization has a sacred text. The Greeks had Homer. The Hebrews had Exodus. The boomers have Star Wars. Laugh if you like. They didn't. They lined up around the block for it, raised their children on it, and paid to hear it retold for fifty years. Because it was about them. In their youth, they saw themselves as rebels. A handful of brave young idealists against an evil empire whose uniforms their fathers wore. So they rose up, blew it to pieces, and danced in the forest while it burned. But ask yourself one question. How oppressive was that order, really? The one that won WW2, built the suburbs, sent them to university for next to nothing, and handed them the richest society in human history? Watch the films again. The Empire never governs. It never builds a road or collects a tax. It just wears a costume borrowed from 1945. They never asked what it actually did. They only needed it to be evil. Then they grew older, and the story changed. Now they were the Jedi. Wise masters in robes, keepers of the peace, guardians of the temple and the ancient ways. An order with total power over the Republic, answerable to no one, testing blood, taking children, deciding who rises and who waits. And yet something is wrong in the temple. Their powers are fading, and they know it. They hide it from the Senate. They turn away the most gifted boy they have ever seen. Why? Because they can feel it coming. The usurper. A young man who will do to them exactly what they did to their fathers. That's the boomer soul. Rebel in youth. Priest in old age. Terrified, always, of the next rebellion. And George Lucas put every bit of it on screen. Which leaves us something remarkable: a lexicon. A map of a generation's mind, drawn by its own hand. Through Star Wars we can walk the corridors of boomer consciousness and see what they worship, what they hide, and what keeps them awake at night. Which brings us to the prophecy. For a thousand years the Jedi guarded it. A Chosen One will come and bring balance to the Force. They were sure it meant their victory. It didn't. So what did it mean? Who was it really about? Why did the wise masters never see it coming? Or did they? And if Lucas wrote a generation's deepest fear into its own sacred text, what else did he write down without knowing? The boy is still standing in the middle of the Council. He has waited long enough. So have you. Come with me, and I'll show you the Sith pill. (Link in the next post)

I’m like 70% through @catehall’s wonderful book You Can Just Do Things, and at first my reaction was “oh, it’s one of those books where if I want to fully internalise it I’ll need 6 months to put all the ideas to practice …” And then I hit Chapter 10 and went “ok one year”

AWS is bragging about fitting 75k idle agents in 8GB of RAM. The agents are literally doing nothing and they're still sitting in memory. Uhhhh just write to disk and run infinity agents on 8GB RAM??? The product is literally called infinity and they can only go up to 75k idle agents.
AWS just open-sourced a runtime that can fit 75,000 concurrent AI agents in 8GB of RAM. the trick is that agents don’t sit around consuming resources while waiting for tools to finish. the runtime saves their state, suspends them, and resumes them when something happens. 75,000 agents. raspberry pi 5 memory. that number is kinda ridiculous.

Interesting point. Self expression through creativity is a counterintuitive casualty of AI.
Many of the things we make, we make secondarily for the thing itself and primarily to relate to each other. AI becomes a noise floor that makes it more difficult to relate to each other through work. You don't know the kind of person on the other side of it.

Morton salt delved too greedily and too deep
Morton salt is mined 2,000 feet below Lake Erie. And now the lake is leaking into the mine. The mine was evacuated, with no injuries. Do not expect the mine to reopen anytime soon. Or ever.

This Friday, I’ll be giving a talk on the historical case for the resurrection of Christ. Several years ago, I began looking into the historical evidence as an atheist to prove that Christianity was nothing but a therapeutic superstition. What I found completely changed my life. Over the course of a year, I spent nearly every waking moment reading whatever I could find on the subject. My entire life was suddenly reorganized around answering this one question: did Jesus Christ actually rise from the dead? There was a time when I thought this question was too ridiculous to even consider. But looking back, it was by far the most important question I've ever asked. If you're interested in learning more, check out the link to the event page below. All are welcome to join regardless of religious background or lack thereof.

Our memories are skewed. You don't remember being 3. Our moms weren't bailing on us for long weekends when we were 3. They were more social, but it was hanging out with aunts and uncles at the house. Card nights, cookouts, etc. Also, our parents were younger than us. 1/n
I’ve been saying it for a while, growing up my parents and all other adults I knew had very active social lives. We never once felt neglected because every few weeks they had their own plans. There is something off nowadays

We LOVED getting these on deployment. Kids would draw the wildest stuff and teachers clearly weren't reviewing them. They would draw Army men shooting people and blood coming out and then it would say "I hope you don't die." Everyone looked forward to getting them.
There is nothing more earnest or unhinged than kids’ letters to the troops
