My latest story for @Stacker explores how Indigenous data warriors like @native4data & @echohawkd3 are fighting for data sovereignty: Indigenous systems for gathering and using data in spite of a system built to exclude them. Read it here: stacker.com/society/indigeno…

As a Kānaka Maoli, stemming from seven generations here on Maui. This is heartbreaking to watch. Colonial greed is burning down our home. And it’s US politicians and polluters to blame. #ClimateEmergency

Wildfires rage on, from Maui to Ontario, while lands continue to be developed for extraction. Indigenous peoples are disproportionately impacted despite overrepresentation in protecting global biodiversity. How’s your International Indigenous People’s Day taking climate action?

To reporters covering the #MauiFire: Please stop characterizing Front Street and Lahaina Town as a “tourist spot” It was the original Capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. King Kamehameha’s palace is here. Kānaka Maoli still live here, on their ancestral land from the 1800s.

Sharing this important collab on race/indigeneity with @native4data in the brand new Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology! Each chapter brings something fresh and understudied in the sociological tradition. Honored to be an important part of this text with @thkukutai and crew!

If SCOTUS wants to pretend that racial discrimination in education is not a thing, does that mean that the US government will also return the 11 million acres of land taken from Indigenous nations, of which major universities are still profiting? hcn.org/articles/indigenous-… – at Mesa, AZ

Echoing these wise words, with Native physicians as less than a percent of all physicians.
The Supreme Court's decision to strike down affirmative action, including in professional schools, like medical and nursing, will have detrimental consequences on Black health for generations to come. This is about life & death for us. Today, we are only 5% of physicians.

It's sad to see Asian students being used to gut Affirmative Action. A reminder that the Model Minority Myth is a tool of white supremacy, not a road to acceptance.

Gorsuch, so-called defender of Native rights, killed affirmative action at universities, which aided countless Native students, and gutted federal protections for reproductive rights, disproportionately impacting Native communities already denied federal funds for abortion.

This is going to be pretty devastating for Native kids, especially from reservations. Hard to compete on academic metrics alone when our schools are criminally underfunded.

Terrible news for Native Americans. We are horrifically underrepresented at elite institutions and this SCOTUS ruling just makes it harder for that first generation to break through. Shamelessly and needlessly ignoring history of White supremacy holding Indigenous people down

Breaking News: The Supreme Court rejected affirmative action at Harvard and UNC. The major ruling curtails race-conscious college admissions in the U.S., all but ensuring that elite institutions become whiter and more Asian and less Black and Latino. nyti.ms/4347Xrx

Let us never forget who benefited most from affirmative action (yt women) since there’s a false claim that Black, Indigenous, & people of color are the ones who benefited at the expense of more qualified white people. The historically excluded are still systematically excluded.
