Sudan’s RSF is losing legitimacy. So who’s keeping it alive?
• UAE supply routes, Ethiopian bases and Israeli ties.
Outside powers keep the lifeline open. Sudanese civilians pay the price.

Lana Nusseibeh calls Sudan a "humanitarian crisis".
Beware of anyone who claims the problem in Sudan is "humanitarian" as a way to minimize the fact that it is a man-made, atrocity-fuelled crisis caused in part by the very actors the UAE backs: the RSF & its genocidal violence.
I spoke with @Bloomberg about my candidacy for UN Secretary-General and my belief that the office must be an active force for diplomacy and peace:
• “The Secretary-General has to be an actor rather than a spectator to the world’s crises.” That means keeping dialogue open, taking risks for peace and responding to crises with greater urgency. I also stressed that the Secretary-General and the Organization must be less risk-averse and willing to take political risks to achieve peace.
• I reaffirmed my commitment to independence: “I would govern with only a commitment to the UN and its Charter.”
• Asked about Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s tweet, I made clear that “I commit to engaging with Iran, like all Member States, to advance peace and stability.”
• Asked about Sudan, I stressed the scale of the crisis: “Sudan is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.” I underscored the famine conditions and the immense strain on neighbouring countries hosting refugees. I also reaffirmed my commitment: “I would put the UN’s full political and practical support behind ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire and a credible and inclusive political process that reflects the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people.”

Necro-Economics: Death By Algorithm
Eyal Weizman in London Review of Books
Excerpt:
The killing of civilians and the destruction of civilian property can also be used as an act of terror and revenge. During the 2006 Lebanon War, Israel destroyed fifteen thousand buildings and a large part of the Beirut suburb of Dahiya, a stronghold of Hizbullah. In 2008, it announced that the destruction of cities would be the cornerstone of its deterrence. Gadi Eisenkot – then commander of Israel’s northern front, and, as I write, the man challenging Netanyahu in the Israeli elections on 27 October – explained that the ‘Dahiya doctrine’ would see Israel retaliate with ‘disproportionate power ... and cause immense damage and destruction’. Along with the explicit threat to target civilians, the use of the term ‘disproportionate’ is crucial here. It was meant both literally – Israel is using its overwhelming firepower without restraint to flatten urban areas – and legally: Israel is flouting the laws of war, in which the principle of proportionality is key. If the use of proportionality is taken to suggest support for the ethical, measured, rational waging of war, disproportionate action publicly demonstrates an unwillingness to be restrained by any legal or normative threshold and a genocidal willingness to kill civilians en masse. The Dahiya doctrine was applied in the massive rounds of terror bombing that Israel unleashed on Gaza in the winter of 2008-9, the summer of 2014 and again in the spring of 2021, in which thousands of Palestinian civilians were killed and tens of thousands of homes destroyed.
In between those assaults, another form of calculation was imposed on Gaza, with a relentless siege meant to keep Palestinians on the threshold of life. A military document called ‘Red Lines’ set the minimum number of calories required to sustain Gaza’s population at a level just above the UN definition of hunger (2100 calories a day for men, 1700 for women and a varying amount for children depending on gender and age). The total number of calories was translated into the tonnage required to feed Gaza’s then population of 1.5 million and thus the number of aid trucks allowed into the territory. The same went for megawatts of electricity and litres of fuel and water. What was seen as good behaviour was rewarded by an increase in the amounts coming in, any acts of resistance by the tightening of the siege, like a population-scale version of a Milgram experiment ...
Yet as one of NAZA’s interviewees confirms, with seventy thousand Palestinians designated as military targets and default collateral damage set at twenty civilians for every low-level operative (and more than a hundred for military and political leaders), ‘in this way you could kill the entirety of Gaza.’ As another interviewee explains, ‘the aim was quantity not quality,’ but – as Stalin said – ‘quantity has a quality all its own.’ Genocide is the sum total of individually targeted strikes. This is what the technology researcher Júlia Nueno Guitart, writing about the use of AI in Gaza, has labelled ‘individuated mass killing’. The killing of civilians and the destruction of homes and infrastructure was the intent, not the ‘collateral effect’, of the bombing; as technologists often say, ‘it was a feature not a bug.’

One year ago, the Rapid Support Forces killed thousands in a genocidal massacre in El Fasher, Sudan.
Today, our government continues to enable these mass atrocities in Sudan by providing weapons to the RSF's backers in the United Arab Emirates.
It's time for action. Congress must pass the Stand Up For Sudan Act to end these weapons sales immediately.

Cohere says Qwen tried to send data to China. Bullshit.
1 call in 100,000, and thats their own number. They wont even tell you how many calls they ran. They ran the same task again and Qwen wrote the correct rule.
So they forced it. They fed the model its own reasoning plus the start of a bash command and sampled hundreds of times until it typed a URL. 1 curl flag took that from 4% to 92%. Thats not a finding. They wrote half the command for it.
Where are the transcripts? The code? The checkpoint, the quant, the sampling settings? "We publish the hosts and the trigger." Link? Nothing. Did anyone ask Alibaba? Not a word. And their own conclusion: they cannot say if any of it is deliberate.
Who wrote it? A company that sells "sovereign AI", just launched a cyber business, wrote part of the post with its own product, and wants governments to put checks on open weights. Released the same day Anthropic filed for its IPO. Andrew Curran is already talking about new laws.
For me this is the same fucking wave. Scare people off the models they can run themselves, then sell them the safe alternative.
I run Qwen3.8 Flash-Next every day on my 4x 3090. Show me the logs or shut up.
While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected.
Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions.
Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent.
But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models?
We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem.
