This movie to me is the combination of the best parts of Soul, Arrival, Edge of Tomorrow, and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop — which, if you know me, is the perfect recipe for a movie lol
I watched this for the first time last month as part of my silly rom-com marathon, and I came in blind. After 120 minutes, it became one of the best experiences I’ve had with a movie in a while hahaha
For a rom-com to hook me there has to be one of two things:
1. a gripping concept, or
2. chemistry of the love at its center
and About Time has both!!
‼️slight spoilers ahead‼️

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭
On the day Tim turns 21, his dad reveals that their side of the family has the ability to travel back in time (limited to their own past). Taken aback at first, Tim eventually welcomes this wondrous ability and sets out to find the love of his life.
Having the power to redo every decision, Tim soon realizes, with lessons imparted from his dad — that he doesn’t need time travel to create the perfect day with the people he treasures.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲
I can't think of many lineups of characters that fit together so well.
Tim’s family with their quirks, Mary and her parents (not a lot of screentime but enough to show why she is the way she is), Tim’s weird but lovable friends — all of them bring such fun dynamics.
But I’ll focus on the characters I love the most:

𝟏. 𝐓𝐢𝐦
A bumbling, awkward, quirky, yet charming fellow whose first idea with this reality-breaking ability is… to get laid 🤦♂️
But throughout the movie, you see how genuinely sweet he is. He goes out of his way so many times to uplift the people around him, and watching him grow into a loving husband and father is one of the most satisfying character arcs I’ve seen.

𝟐. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲
The movie intentionally shows very little of Mary outside of Tim’s perspective — but it never feels condescending. They still flesh her out as a real, established person. From being the #1 Kate Moss fangirl to the subtle insecurities that shape her personality, Mary is also incredibly sweet!
She’s never a trophy for Tim to win. She’s a loving wife and mother, a lifelong partner who helps Tim with life’s decisions and builds a family of warmth and happiness with him.

𝟑. 𝐃𝐚𝐝
I LOVE that the movie never tells us his name — he’s simply “Dad”
It helps us feel the depth of his character. Every part of who he is makes sense. A father’s love knows no bounds, with or without time travel.

𝐀 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐨𝐦-𝐂𝐨𝐦
About Time is such a meta rom-com. It plays wonderfully with romance and comedy, uses genre tropes well, but goes much further thanks to its brilliant concept.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐇
Ending there alone would make it a good movie — but About Time is so much deeper than I first gave it credit for.
It’s a story that celebrates romantic love, yes, but it’s also an ode to familial love, to the love of life itself, and to the beauty of everyday living.
Even the core concept is far more nuanced than it initially seems.
(‼️HEAVY SPOILERS HERE‼️)

Tim keeps using his ability to redo even the smallest mistakes seemingly without any downside at first.
But when the consequences come in the form of having to choose between fixing the past and sacrificing his own child, the movie reveals a truth: Some moments can’t be undone, and being forced to make a choice between a rock and a hard place is what make shapes you.
And when Tim’s dad explains this — You realize he already made this choice himself.
Maybe he went back in time trying to quit his smoking, but realized he would lose Tim and Kit Kat. And he would never, never sacrifice his children for his life.
And that hit me like a whale 😭

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧
For a movie everyone remembers as - sad, this is one of the most hopeful films I’ve ever experienced.
There’s no villain Tim needs to defeat to be with Mary. He just lives his life and deals with the complexity that comes with it.
Remove the time travel and isn’t that just real life?
No one’s out to get you… unless your name is Jun (I’m coming for your pink cardigan buddy 🫵)
Life is everyday moments — happiness and sorrow, temptation and growth, success and failure.
Even without time travel, we choose how to live, how to find beauty in the mundane, how to cherish the present. Which isn’t always the easiest thing to do when you’re busy just trying to survive.
It really brings me to tears

The actors gave it their all to breathe life into the characters.
The cohesive vision that the director held brought everything together into a singular, connective narrative thread.
From the use of that brilliant soundtrack to the shot choices, composition, and seamless editing that never feels repetitive.
