📰 Loan Sharks Accused of Withholding IDs, Raising Concerns Over Voting Rights in North West
Kim Medupi, a permanent delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) representing the North West province, has raised concerns about loan sharks allegedly withholding people's identity documents, potentially preventing them from exercising their right to vote in the upcoming local government elections.
Medupi warned that the practice is widespread in the North West, where individuals who borrow money from informal lenders, commonly known as mashonisas, may find themselves unable to access their identity documents.
She cautioned that unless urgent action is taken, affected residents could be prevented from participating in the democratic process because of their financial obligations to these lenders.
Medupi made the remarks as part of a parliamentary delegation that visited the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) headquarters on Friday to assess the commission's preparedness for the upcoming local government elections.
The delegation comprised members of three parliamentary portfolio committees responsible for Home Affairs, Cooperative Governance, and Safety and Justice.
