The Fed held rates at 4%, as markets expected. The vote was 10 to 2. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack wanted a quarter-point hike. The statement says economic activity is “expanding at a strong pace” and inflation “remains elevated.” 🧵

At the press conference, Chair Warsh said the Fed’s moves are “starting to work some,” but there are “no firm conclusions.” Financial conditions are tighter, he said, but he is “unwilling and unable to call them tight.” The Fed will also change its meeting schedule from next fall. One meeting a year will focus on strategy, with no vote on rates. Warsh expects six rate-setting meetings in 2028.

The two-year Treasury yield fell about seven basis points while Warsh spoke, and Bitcoin held near $81,000. The takeaway: with the Fed waiting for more information, each data release can move markets, so the data matters more than guessing the next move. Next data to watch: GDP and PCE inflation data on October 29, the jobs report on November 6, and CPI inflation data on November 10.
