Putin says Ukrainian land belongs to Russia because of history. But what happens when we apply his logic to Russia itself?
On October 22, Putin once again claimed that Ukrainian territories are historically Russian.
“This is not their territory. It’s the territory of historical Russia,” he said.
Interesting argument. Let’s apply the same logic to Russia.
🇯🇵 Japan: The Soviet Union seized the southern Kuril Islands in 1945. Japan still claims four of those islands, which Russia controls today.
🇨🇳 China: Vladivostok and large parts of Russia’s Far East were once under China’s Qing dynasty. Russia acquired these territories through treaties in the 19th century.
🇫🇮 Finland: Vyborg and parts of Karelia belonged to Finland before World War II. Finland was forced to surrender them to the Soviet Union.
🇩🇪 Germany: Kaliningrad was once Königsberg, a German city and part of East Prussia until 1945.
🇹🇷 Turkey: The Ottoman Empire once controlled Azov and held territory and influence around the northern Black Sea before Russian expansion.
So here’s a question for Putin:
Should Japan take back its islands? Should China reclaim Vladivostok? Should Finland reclaim Vyborg? Should Germany reclaim Kaliningrad?
Of course, historical possession does not automatically give any country the right to seize territory today. Most of these countries do not even make such claims.
And that is precisely the point.
If every country started invading its neighbors to recover territory it controlled centuries ago, where would it end?
Ukraine is an internationally recognized sovereign country. Russia recognized its borders.
History is not a license to invade. And Ukraine does not belong to Russia simply because Putin says it does.
Stand with Ukraine. 🇺🇦

If only we’d built nuclear plants instead of Snowy Hydro 2.
Even in the worst case scenario where Bowen compares it to Hinkley C Nuclear Plant that will be an about a 3x cost increase, a lot better than a 12x blowout for a battery.
Hinkley C will produce 7% of the UK’s electricity from just 2 reactors for over 60 years.
At more realistic CSIRO prices you could have built 5 large nuclear reactors for the up to $50bn price tag of Snowy Hydro 2 (including transmission lines).
It’s worth reminding ourselves that the one reactor Australia did build recently, the OPAL research reactor, was basically on time and on budget.

Biggest news in safe nuclear waste disposal ever!
"This is the first operating license anywhere in the world granted for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel."
Huge congrats to Finland for finally answering the question and implementing the solution.
🥇 A historic world first! Finland grants #Posiva the first operating licence for spent nuclear fuel final disposal. Over 40 years of work have paid off. Commissioning continues, with safety first.

No. Since the USSR's dissolution in 1991, no country has issued a threat to invade Russia. Conflicts involving Russia have been initiated by Moscow (Chechnya, Georgia 2008, Ukraine 2014/2022) or were internal. NATO is a defensive alliance with no such plans or doctrine; Russian claims of existential threats from expansion lack evidence of invasion intent. Ukrainian operations into Russian territory occurred only after Russia's full-scale invasion.

⚠️ Confirmed: Metrics show a second collapse in the networks of Russian tech giant Yandex after a new Ukrainian drone attack on data centers in Vladimir this morning. The campaign comes not long after Russia's threat to give Ukraine a "digital detox."

If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉

Trump’s diesel deal with Putin makes no sense (it’s also immoral since it will fund the ailing Kremlin war machine).
The US has no need of Russian diesel. It already refines more than enough for domestic demand — with 1.5m b/d for export.
Russia has no diesel to export. Ukrainian drones have taken out a third of Russian refining capacity, turning Russia into a net importer of diesel (from India).
The volumes involved are derisory. The initial Russian offer = 2.2m barrels. The US consumes 3.5m b/d.
The price of diesel at the US pump is between $6/6.50. That won’t change before the midterms. The deal does nothing to help Trump in these elections.
But it bolsters Putin and undermines Ukraine.
