🇫🇷🇨🇭 France is now widely described as the sick man of Europe, yet Switzerland is rarely mentioned as a compelling counterfactual. The two countries followed almost identical fiscal paths between 1990 and 2000, with Switzerland also carrying substantial public debt by the standards of the time and facing a rising debt trajectory. In 2001, however, Switzerland enshrined an optimal fiscal rule in its constitution and subsequently implemented it to the letter, with extraordinary results. The question remains the same, why does the economics profession not study the Swiss case more thoroughly?

BREAKING: Denmark's former foreign minister “shocked” over Nobel prize to Navi Pillay. “She is not qualified,” says Per Stig Møller. When Denmark was attacked by Muslims over cartoons of Mohammed, Pillay refused to help. “Her response was that we should introduce censorship.” 🧵

In an interview with the Danish newspaper Berlingske, Denmark’s former foreign minister Per Stig Møller recounts a highly compromising story about the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Navi Pillay. In 2008, when Denmark faced problems in Pakistan (a car bomb exploded outside the embassy) because of the Muhammad cartoons, Denmark turned to the UN - including the then High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. On that occasion Pillay was completely dismissive of supporting Denmark. Her only recommendation to the foreign minister was to introduce censorship. That, she said, would prevent the problem in the future. I find it shocking that an opponent of freedom of speech can be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Our state has an exceptionally rich Czech heritage, and it was tremendously encouraging to see Czech President Petr Pavel visit our state this week. In Wilber, Nebraska, he saluted the vitality of Czech heritage in Nebraska "I hardly get emotional, but I do today, and it's all because (of) the warm welcome that we received here. "It's all because of dedication that you pay to the traditions, the language, the culture, the country of your grandparents, and it's something really special" @CZinWashington @USEmbassyPrague @SenatorFischer @SenatorRicketts @USRepMikeFlood @RepAdrianSmith @RepDonBacon journalstar.com/news/state-r…
