ALT 1. Boycott the Boiler Room KL show, No art washing genocide Boiler Room, a media company that platforms dance music globally, is organising its first show in Kuala Lumpur on 20 November titled “Kuala Lumpur: Kelab Durian” featuring local and diaspora artists and DJs. Boiler Room has made a name of itself for contributing to and showcasing underground music. However in January 2025, Boiler Room was acquired by Superstruct, whose parent company is the private equity firm KKR. KKR invests in weapons manufacturers, surveillance technology and Israeli businesses complicit in the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.

ALT KKR’s acquisition of Boiler Room is a clear example of art washing: when companies and organisations use investments and sponsorship of art and cultural events to distract from their harmful actions. Since Boiler Room’s acquisition by Superstruct, it has been targeted by boycotts by artists and communities around the world. Artists and music lovers in New York City, the Bay Area, Barcelona, Lisbon, Puerto Rico and Brazil have counter organised events and boycotted Boiler Room events and festivals organised by Superstruct for its complicity in genocide and apartheid. These counter events and protests have led to the cancellation of Boiler Room events in Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Bay Area. As Malaysians for the liberation of Palestine, we firmly reject the use of art and music to whitewash genocide and apartheid. We call for the following: Attendees to boycott Kelab Durian Artists to withdraw from Kelab Durian Sponsors & vendors to withdraw from Kelab Durian Say no to art washing!
