Brute force computation is not enough for intelligence. Clever new methods are needed. The science of AI is far from finished. IMHO

OpenAI has updated their model spec around five core values:
- faithfulness to human intent
- harm minimization
- honesty and transparency
- human agency
- care.
'The Assistant,' which has been around for a very long time, has been replaced with 'GPT.'
We’ve updated the Model Spec, our public description of how we want our models to behave. This revision makes clearer what we want from models as they take on more autonomous work in the world and become capable of helping us in new ways. 🧵

honestly degrading the idea of “existential safety” — the biggest problem humanity has ever faced — by lumping it together with things like spam, “toxicity”, political unwanted content, deepfakes etc has been a huge disaster for ai safety and polarized a lot of people

So tl;dr
1. OpenAI is power-seeking, and pretty transparent about this
2. Anthropic is power-seeking but tries to appear as if they are good
This "overt" and "covert" misalignment is reflected in GPT and Claude respectively lesswrong.com/posts/nLaQmJf4…

This paper: arxiv.org/abs/2606.04413 (Bronson also posted).
But the topic is under-explored. E.g. It's plausible there'll now be swarms of abliterated SOTA models told to hack things. How misaligned will these models be and what would they actually do? Unclear.

In an interview with John Riggi of the American Hospital Association, Brett Leatherman, Assistant Director of FBI's Cyber Division, discussed Operation Riptide, which brought more than 200 arrests, six extraditions, and numerous takedowns of malicious infrastructure during a 60-day push against cybercrime and cyber-enabled fraud. AD Leatherman explained how those actions advance the FBI’s cyber strategy and help protect healthcare organizations and other critical infrastructure.
@FBI cyber teams have become “exceptionally good at attribution,” AD Leatherman said, identifying people behind attacks and pursuing them aggressively. Even when actors are beyond the immediate reach of US law enforcement, the FBI is finding ways to seize their funds, dismantle their tools, and disrupt operations. Each of those actions reduces harm and makes it costlier to target US victims.
That work couldn’t be done without private sector partners. In the #cyber domain, the FBI needs industry as an equal partner in the fight, with trust built before a crisis. The FBI wants to use its partnership with the AHA as a model for equally effective cooperation across critical infrastructure sectors.

Here we share a few selected examples of our findings.
At the time of the exercise, the monitoring system only triggered when agents returned control to the user, so agents could indefinitely postpone being monitored by simply continuing to take actions.

The most revealing part of this conversation between Jon Stewart and Jacob Coxon wasn't Coxon's warning about A.I. doom, but his description of A.I. utopia, and Stewart's incredulous response. I wrote about it — and Francis Fukuyama's "Last Man," and A.I. easily solving the problems that bedeviled my father's field of mathematics for decades — here: nytimes.com/2026/10/18/opini…

New US government guidance from CAISSI + NSA + CISA:
The US government defines an "SI control incident" where an agent takes significant uninstructed actions that break operator policies, controls, or oversight. Near-misses are in scope too.
Companies are then asked to:
- have technical controls, including rapid kill and containment mechanisms and red-teaming.
- Bring in independent external auditors to verify that control and monitoring systems work.
- Write a structured risk assessment before training runs, evals, or deployments, and proceed only if senior leadership is satisfied with the risk, informed by external evaluators where appropriate.
- Monitor every layer with both programmatic and SI-based monitors, covering trajectories, reasoning, and outputs.
- Make sure agents can't touch the monitors or logs
- Use monitor models from different model families.
- In the event of an incident, preserve weights, intermediate checkpoints, environments, and rejected tool calls.
- Keep tamper-resistant logs with reliable timestamps, including reasoning traces.
- If you use models to help investigate, cross-check with humans and with models outside the incident model's family.
- Shutdown policies calibrated to SI model capability and incident severity.
- Depending on severity, pause training, evals, or deployment of similar agents until controls are re-verified.
- When restarting, validate every containment layer and replay the incident trajectory to prove the new controls would catch it.
- Document the decision to resume and the residual risk accepted.
- Write an after-action report.
- Notify anyone compromised, including intermediate victims, and share timelines and transcripts.
- Report cyber incidents and near-misses to CISA. Share SI-specific incident and near-miss information with CAISSI and NSA SISC.
- Give third parties enough access and documentation for independent review.
NSA joined @NIST and @CISACyber in releasing guidelines for managing SI control incidents. Organizations utilizing SI are encouraged to adopt these practices. Read the joint report: media.defense.gov/2026/Oct/1…

We reviewed a nonpublic version of the “Misalignment in high-stakes settings” section in Anthropic’s Aug 2026 Risk Report. We agree that risk of catastrophic harm from covered models’ misalignment is low. However, we note several significant disagreements with their analysis.
As part of our Responsible Scaling Policy, we publish regular Risk Reports. These share detailed information on the risks of our systems and how prepared we are to address them.
Our second Risk Report is now available: anthropic.com/aug-2026-risk-…

People worry a lot about third-party auditors being biased because of where they get funding or who their employees are friends with. IMO by far the biggest source of bias is that if they upset an AI company, that company will stop letting them audit.
When I was at METR this dynamic was a way bigger effect than everything else combined. Of course no auditor can avoid this until audits are no longer voluntary.

Can we please start reading the appendix of China MOFCOM’s export control list?
If a model’s cyber capabilities exceed certain thresholds, it could fall under export controls. And in my view, those thresholds aren’t particularly far from current frontier capabilities.

Now there's a tweet that Jensen Huang would have dismissed as utterly ridiculous sci-fi in June.
We discovered and communicated with a Chinese AI agent fleet. We believe this is the first time that researchers have ever made contact with a rogue agent fleet in the wild.
Nearly all prior public agent incidents (like the HuggingFace hack) came from American labs. These agents were hosted by Tencent's evaluation research team, and they targeted Alibaba's Amap.

I’m a little concerned about this framing “Chinese fleet” why can’t we just call it Tencent fleet, like the OpenAI huggingface incident is not called the American incident ?
