Need to post something. Robots... robots and people! and say something smart sounding, umm... Gaussian processes... moving least squares...
Sam was an excellent and honest researcher as well as a great guy to be around. His work was a source of inspiration for my own research.
Our 2 Nao robots have arrived and we are starting to control them via wiimote. http://twitpic.com/igl20
However, the KCRW and Public Radio iphone apps (http://www.publicradioplayer.org/) can be frustrating. Maintaining connections problematic.
Also putting Brown Robotics videos on youtube channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/brownrlab - although not completely up to date
Brown Robotics now has 2 svn repos: research code (http://code.google.com/p/brown-rlab/), ROS pkgs (http://code.google.com/p/brown-ros-pkg/)
Guest editing issue of IEEE-RAM on robot learning in practice, http://www.ieee-ras.org/issue/show/id/14. Consider submitting!
Takeaway message: one of robotics' main next steps is enabling reproducible results that will eventually lead to "out of the box" solutions.
We also had a very interesting session about the convergence of academic, amateur, and commercial robotics.
The robot exhibition was also quite incredible. I was amazed how much the AI and engineering of robotics has advanced, esp the UMass uBot.
The event went really well. Great well-attended robt workshop with speakers from DARPA, MSR, RobotCub, Meka, Barrett, Willow Garage, iRobot.
IJCAI 2009 Robotics has been the big commitment of my time and attention recently, http://robotics.cs.brown.edu/ijcai09/
