“John was a very spiritual guy, but he was also very magnetic. So I understood why Elvin had to play the way he played. Because whatever you could throw at John, John was like a sponge—he absorbed it. So I realized on an energetic level how amazing John Coltrane was”

Please strike a deal with @BBCRadio3, and take Birtwistle’s Gawain (3rd version, 2014 @BarbicanCentre) out of their vaults and put it on disc. And while yor’re at it, grab along the 2017 broadcast of The Last Supper as well. Thank you. – at Tampere, Finland

It is with deep sadness that we learnt of the passing of André Previn. A wonderful performer, conductor and composer as well as an eloquent communicator we look back in thanks and pleasure on many special projects together.

On the 1st evening, the opening movement lasted 40 minutes with Gould’s extra-slow tempi. For the orchestra (and, obviously, for the conductor), it was quite a struggle. Yet, would be fascinating to actually hear it. It must have been really weird...

Ah, that crazy Gould/LB Brahms PC1. It is a shame, that there’s no recording of that 1st evening performance itself, apart from Lenny’s speech. The concerto recording was made on the 2nd evening, with much less weird tempi.

A joke: "Bernstein, Bohm and Karajan argue who's the greatest conductor on earth. Bernstein says that God appeared to him &said, "It's you!" Bohm replies that God appeared to him &told him, "It's you!" Karajan drily adds, "I said nothing of the sort!"
