On Saturday 24th October, our MIST System was activated for its first real incident in the Southbound tunnel, in response to a vehicle fire.
The Fixed Fire Suppression System was the first of its kind to be installed in a British tunnel, and it is a critical part of our tunnels safety. Activated via our SCADA monitoring system, the system can target three fire zones, including the affected zone plus one zone either side, to fully contain the fire until emergency services respond. While we hope it's rarely needed, Saturday's incident demonstrated exactly why this investment in safety and regular maintenance is so important.
We are pleased to share that the incident was safely resolved within an hour, with no reported injuries, and attendance from the North East Ambulance Service was not required.
A big thank you to our Operational Delivery team, as well as emergency services who responded quickly and professionally.

30 years ago today, Michael Jackson’s “Ghosts” premiered. The supernatural short film doubled as the longest music video of its era. Directed by Stan Winston, co written by Stephen King and starring MJ in multiple roles including the Maestro and the Mayor of Normal Valley. It paired top tier choreography, practical effects and the songs “2 Bad,” “Is it Scary,” and “Ghosts.”
A dark, playful follow up to the spirit of Thriller, it also carried the message about not fearing people who are different. Still under seen compared to its pedigree, it holds up as one of MJ’s most ambitious visual projects.
