Sclerotinia can cause major yield loss to canola. Applying fungicides correctly is the best way to maximize protection and economic return.

Leaf rust occurs across the U.S. and Canada and can cause severe yield loss in epidemic years. Leaf rust develops on lower leaves first and progresses up the plant.
Each year, spores are blown north on wind currents from tropical areas. When conditions are favorable, the infection cycle will continually repeat and result in secondary infections.
Host resistance is an important management tool. Fungicides are labeled for leaf rust. A fungicide decision should be influenced by varietal susceptibility, weather forecast, and yield potential. Fungicide should be applied preventively and target the flag leaf (FGS 8-9).

After tillering, stripe rust of wheat develops parallel to leaf veins, giving the foliage a distinct striped appearance. After infection, the fungus may produce new generations of spores in as few as 10 days under optimal conditions.
The primary means to manage stripe rust is to plant resistant varieties. Consider applying fungicides to susceptible varieties if stripe rust has been detected in the region and forecasted conditions are favorable for disease development and spread. Applications at flag leaf emergence help protect the flag leaf and reduce yield loss.

How were your yields this year?
Whether they were great or poor, this will influence your soil nutrient reserves.
Fall is the most convenient time for soil sampling & can help you make fertilizer decisions for the coming spring.

Fusarium stalk rot causes shredded pith that may be tan to light pink. Brown streaks may be observed on the lower internodes.
The fungi overwinter in corn residue, other dead plant residue, and in corn seed.
Resistance to Fusarium stalk rot is available. Rotation and tillage will reduce inoculum.

Barley yellow dwarf (BYD) of wheat is widespread throughout the U.S. and Canada. Aphids that carry the virus overwinter in winter wheat and can spread the virus to spring wheat.
Varieties resistant to BYD are available. Altering planting date can help avoid virus transmission to young, susceptible wheat plants. Insecticide use for aphid management is generally not economically beneficial. Eliminate grass hosts to remove the green bridge between wheat crops. This includes eliminating volunteer wheat plants in or near fields where wheat will be planted.

Ear rot & mycotoxin issues during #harvest25?
Set the combine to harvest clean, whole kernels, as aflatoxins & fumonisins are often concentrated in light, damaged kernels. To minimize kernel damage, use the lowest possible cylinder speed necessary to shell grain effectively while maintaining acceptable loss levels (less than 1%). Excessive cylinder speed is the leading cause of kernel damage, so adjust concave clearance to avoid breaking cobs excessively before increasing cylinder speed. Ensure sufficient airflow to remove chaff & small, light kernels.
