… I feel like a lot of people don’t get what the halting problem proof is about
When I was a junior engineer I unironically DID propose this as a solution to the halting problem! A program objectively halts or doesn't halt for a given input, so take the set of all lookup tables and encode each in a separate TM. Then one of those TMs will just happen to guess the right answer for each TM in the lookup table, and that will be a valid halt detector. This doesn't tell you which TM in the set actually is the halt detector, but at least you know it exists! The problem with this is that any given TM has a finite size, meaning you can only encode a finite lookup table as part of the definition. So then there must exist TMs outside the lookup table, so you don't have a valid halt detector. Notice this means that it is possible to make a halt detector for all TMs under a given size. So while "does an arbitrary TM halt on an empty input" is undecidable, "does an arbitrary TM with fewer than a billion states halt on an empty input" is decidable. And we do have an algorithm for determining if an N-state TM halts: run it and see if it halts after BusyBeaver(N) steps.

tbh this is one case where I do not think that japan is behind america in any form wrt gender diversity at this level of senior game directorship

These are such a great resource. FWIW, there's a lot of people involved in making Blizzard games great but if you had to pick a single person as the repository of blizzard system design wisdom you could do a lot worse than wyatt
I've never met Wyatt Chang or worked with him (though I know people who have and they spoke highly of him), but that aside, these shorts he's been making are GREAT if you love game design. HIGHLY recommend them, as they're full of good nuggets. I've enjoyed them all!

Going public with all of this is really interesting. I do start to wonder if they are planning to get into the engine licensing business.
Capcom’s REX project is a gradual evolution of RE ENGINE, not a replacement. The goal is to modernize core systems while keeping existing projects and workflows intact. RE:Dox: standardizes game data for faster loading, easier editing, and better interoperability. RE:UI: rethinks tool UI architecture to reduce freezes, GC pressure, memory use, and unnecessary updates. RE:Log: compact ID-based binary logging, centralized collection, localization support, telemetry, and integration with RPC. RE:Flows: visual gameplay authoring that can be converted into a standard programming-language representation for easier collaboration and maintenance. RE:Runtime: new runtime and memory management designed for very large numbers of game objects. RE:C++: an intermediate or target language intended to translate developer-facing code into efficient runtime code. AI integration: Capcom wants RE ENGINE to become an “AI-generation game engine,” where AI can understand code, generate implementations, run tests, and find problems automatically. The interesting part is that Capcom is doing this incrementally. Instead of building “RE ENGINE 2,” they are replacing individual systems as needed while continuing to ship games on the same engine.

"your domain is not my domain therefore you should stop making things for your domain" is defintiely a take
(Deleted my prev. post JIC) .NET devs should really stop introducing blazing fast (de)serializers 🙂. The world is going through a period when anyone using e.g. GLM5.3 can easily find and exploit a memory safety issue - many projects are overwhelmed by 1000s of potential CVE reports, though not everyone chooses to report what they find. Deserializers often accept untrusted input from external sources, making them prime targets for attacks. Embrace safety over saving a few nanoseconds and fewer heap allocations.

IMO - the simplest reason is that the aspects of game development that take the most time and inject the most risk are problems that aren't currently efficiently solvable by throwing tokens at them. The cost to results ratio is currently not great for many non-coding dev tasks.
no evidence of AI coding uplift in video game development. why?

I've always been pretty confused on what the goals of anti-dev social media brigading has been. I mean, you may occasionally be able to successfully get an individual dev fired, but the cost is disincentivizing everyone else from engaging with the community in their "real" voice.

to be clear, this doesn't mean you have to be needlessly positive. I would occasionally watch "worst bosses in X tier" videos and when a boss I made showed up I felt like it was actually a great opportunity to learn how to do my work better. personal attacks don't feel like that

I *want* to engage with the communities for games I work on bc I want to see praise AND criticism for my work. It's one of the best ways for me to grow as a designer. Criticism never discourages me. Personal attacks and cruetly, *especially* against current/former coworkers does.

I genuinely don't know if there's an artist where the quality delta in the songs they're known for vs their best work is as wide as with randy newman lol

Anyways, last thing on Kanji - it is funny for people who are native speakers of a language where a huge proportion of *native* writers cannot reliabliy distinguish there/their and your/you're to criticize Kanji.
