Symbols are inherently devoid of both value and meaning upon creation. Value only begins to accrue to them as they get imbued with meaning by a network that discovers the symbol and recognizes it as a viable container to project onto. “Art” can never survive outside of the upper class gallery world bc value is set at creation and its meaning is assembled without a network from top down in order to support the given value. What none of these “tokenized meme marketplaces” seem to get is that outside of speculation, there is no lemming race. The only incentive is to be early so that you can sell high. But there’s no meaning, the value is made up by those who risk loss instead of those who find meaning in the symbol. Networks self assemble when they encounter ideal conditions for growth just like everything else in nature. Ideas/memes are inert until they are imbued with enough power and viability to attract capable idealists and loyal servants to the network that are willing to abandon their ego/individualism in order to be a part of the network and commit to selfless propagation of the meme. In order for those rare conditions to exist, you need to design incentives that promote their growth and sustainability, none of which involve extracting value from the network for personal gain. It’s not just that those markets are lacking valuable creations - they lack the base primitives needed for meaning + value to exist in any form beyond adversarial speculation
