How does a geocoder decide what results to show and in what order?
Here's a brief overview tacked on to the end of an _excellent_ thread about speech/text processing by @lemonodor

distance (if we have a "focus point" to use), "popularity" (comes from many sources, Pelias doesn't use Wikipedia page views but Nominatim does), good ol' TF/IDF, all of the above really

Though Pelias uses Elasticsearch, we do not believe it is possible to exploit the new #log4shell log4j vulnerability through Pelias

It’s reverse geocoding. And wow! I just saw from your profile that you’re behind Pelias. We just started using pelias in my team at DH as one of our geocoding back ends.
Thanks for giving us Pelias 🙌🙌🙌🙌
We love hearing about people using Pelias.
If you're using it for a personal project, for a business, a non-profit, in government, anything.
If you wrote your masters thesis about Pelias we DEFINITELY want to hear about it.

If you like reading about the internals of a geocoder (of course we do!), then this post on how Algolia Places works/worked should fascinate you
thanks @jasonbosco for the share

The Geocoder gem supports Pelias too, of course!

Great article on when to use the excellent Ruby 'Geocoder' gem, and when you need to take more control and work with @postgis directly.
By the way, the 'Geocoder' gem supports tons of geocoding services out of the box, including Geocode Earth!

Our friends at @reachnow have confirmed what so many of us already know: address quality in OSM in Germany is pretty incredible.
Cool part is they used the Pelias `pbf2json` tool to do it.

A great question from one of our community members:
"What's the best way to contribute missing addresses"
We wrote back with several different options for contributing open data including @openaddr
and @openstreetmap, and when to use them

Pelias's success is in no small part thanks to Brian opening approximately several thousand GitHub issues in 2015-2016, covering most of the state of Florida, which to this day allow us to continue to improve our geocoding results
🙏 Thanks Brian

I've used many geocoders over the years and @pelias_geocoder is great / one of the best, uses OpenAddresses + more. @geocodeearth provides a rock solid API - and @geocodeearth founders are core Pelias developers.
PSA: if you are using Elasticsearch for Pelias, ensure it's _not_ open to the internet.
You will have all your data deleted by the Meow attack or others like it.
We've already had one community member write in that they've been hit

Doing a bit of reminiscing today about the @mapzen days, this time with @tigerlily_he's "Letter to Future Interns"
It's still a great cache of advice and links for all things @pelias_geocoder, geocoding in general, and software development

Ancient Greek Pelias sent Jason.
We send JSON, so mostly the same thing
We try :)
The only caveat is you have to be able to buy new hard drives faster than open data grows.
There's at least 100 million new records a year

Upgraded my old PC that's running the Advisory Circular bots from 8 to 16 GB and now it runs the planet-scale geo DB (pelias) too. Blows my mind that anyone with 16 GB RAM and 450 GB of disk can have info on addresses, POIs, neighborhoods, etc. anywhere on Earth.
