I didn't say this yesterday because I simply wanted to mourn the company, but yes, Erik is absolutely right. The biggest mortal wounds to Bioware were done by EA trying to fit Bioware's square peg into EA's live service round hole. Anthem is obviously the biggest example, but Dragon Age and its core development talent were undone by it and so too was Mass Effect. The irony is that if EA had simply developed a Mass Effect or even Dragon Age version of Battlefield as a separate product instead of consistently pushing Bioware to piggyback multiplayer functionality into the single player experience, they would have had whole other lines of successful products. Bioware Montreal would probably still be humming happily along. Instead, Bioware became the latest victim in an inglorious history of Electronic Arts buying RPG studios and trying to cure them of their strengths by forcing them to chase whatever the latest game trends were. As before, the talent that made the company what it was moved on, and those who remained or came on later ended up being the caretakers for the funeral procession.
Ultimately, yes we should blame EA for the worst foibles of BioWare. They were in charge, after all, and they picked who would lead the studio and what direction it would go. It was never a good fit. I wish BioWare had been able to go independent all those years ago instead.

I remember when BioWare was a small studio that made Shattered Steel for us at Interplay. We saw the promise in what they could do, and they went on to create Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and become legendary. A sad day indeed. My thoughts are with everyone there today.

As a kid, The Bard's Tale was the first game that got me thinking that I could be in the game industry when I got older. Bioware, though, was the company that actively got me pursuing that dream. I'll always be grateful to the Bioware vets who helped nudge me toward that day.

The greatest TV station ever. It was a tragedy when it got turned into the original CW.
WSBK-TV/TV38 signed on the air 62 years ago today, October 12, 1964. Over the next four decades, it became one of America's premier independent stations, powered by broadcasts of the Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics. Beyond sports, TV38 became legendary for The Movie Loft, hosted by the iconic Dana Hersey. One memorable chapter came in 1982, when the nationwide 3-D movie craze reached television and The Movie Loft aired the 1954 3-D horror classic “Gorilla at Large”, bringing the novelty of three-dimensional movies into local living rooms.

On one hand, I'm tentatively happy that Sicario 3 is happening. On the other hand, Jeffrey Donovan absolutely has to come back, too. And Steven Knight writing it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

It's all for nothing if we don't get this patriot on board.

Legitimately one of my favorite things growing up was seeing how the same game was adapted across different systems. You could create an entire game design course on examining the technical and design choices made to make the game run and retain the spirit of the gameplay.
The past couple of weeks has seen a frenzy of new games being developed for the Vectrex. Fabio Giampietro is developing 2 games right now that have taken us by surprise. Vector Dragons is basically Double Dragon, the other game is Vector Burner which is a conversion of Sega’s Afterburner and that looks absolutely stunning. #vectrex #doubledragon #arcade #retrogaming

I frequently tell people that Pitfall! was the first true "hype" game that I remember people eagerly awaiting its release. Including me!
First thought when you see these? ✨

As inspired as that tauntaun sleeping bag a few years back!
Now you can get your girl the Christmas gift that she's always wanted. Excellent, excellent.

Another day, another offensively terrible censoring of older artwork in the name of...something. The people who make these decisions are Philistines and should never be allowed near any creative endeavor.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” ― George Orwell, 1984

Back when they remade all the LucasArts adventure games 15-16 years ago, I kept waiting for this one to get its moment but...still waiting. :-(
September 18, 1990: Maniac Mansion was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America.

If you are among the few who get both sides of the joke here, I hope you laugh as hard as I did. (And you should look up the Lennon/Berry performance. I'm presuming it's kicking around YouTube somewhere.)

Randomly saw this, and all I can think is that whoever did the cover design for this *has* to have had a hand in designing the early covers for Electronic Arts games.

The one for Heat is particularly inspired.
I love seeing posters that do not match the vibe of a film at all

Still the best Lovecraft-themed video game ever created.
The head of Nightdive Studios appears to be teasing a remaster of GameCube cult classic Eternal Darkness. vgc.news/news/the-head-of-ni…

Legendary, influential original. Gold standard for what a remaster can be.
A tavern. A trading post. A temple. A maze. It’s been a very long time. Perhaps some old adventures deserve another turn. Today, we celebrate Robert Woodhead and the late Andrew Greenberg on the 45th anniversary of the dungeon crawler that started it all, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

Hmm. There's quite a few I still revisit. I'll try to set myself to just one and then do that for each decade. 1970's: Space Invaders 1980's: Pac-Man 1990's: Master of Orion 2 2000's: Rome: Total War 2010's: Civilization V (close between this and Stellaris) 2020's: Old World
If you are part of the generation that played games throughout the 80s, is there one from that decade that you still play occasionally?
