You don’t grow a mustache like this without doing some serious shit. Shane Barnes did bad things to some bad people as a 160th Nightstalker. Most notable- an operation a couple years back that killed the top ISIS leader. Shane didn’t miss. He took my spot on that operation, and I stayed home. The result was a bad dude dead and the birth of my daughter 9 months later. He pushed me- and I pushed him. The type of relationship that accelerates your life. Shane was killed when the force positioned across the world to help our allies. He left behind a very young family.

My close friend asked me for tips on how to grow your audience on X. This is what I told him: “Mike, you’re very smart. PhD smart. You’re very intelligent and you’re great at critical thinking. I need you to stop doing all of that.” @smallrites

I love it when this video makes the rounds Looks really cool, right? Here’s what’s actually happening: -Pilot in the left-hand seat on the controls is staring at a speck of dust on the ground beneath, trying to not lose side picture on it -Crew chief on the left-hand side is yelling at the pilot on the controls to not move because if he does, the aircraft is gonna flip over -Crew chief on the right hand side is just sitting down in his seat, saying his Hail Mary hoping everything goes OK. He just ran out of White Monster and looking forward to cracking a fresh one -Pilot on the right hand side is the new guy so he’s just sitting there with the blank stare no idea what’s going on but thinking oh cool this is seems pretty neat can’t wait to tell the girls down on Broadway this weekend.

I'm in the back "supervising"
If you've never cut firewood with a crosscut saw, an axe, and a maul, you can't really appreciate the realities of modern society. It's kind of stunning how many calories it takes. If a guy did this to heat his cabin every day, you sure as hell would not need CrossFit to exist on this planet. #PursuitWithCliff

Me and @pinpulleddrmf have a peer group for entrepreneurs called Threshold where we do stuff like this. In December, we’re going to camp and chase pigs for a few days. Details: Dec. 4–7, near Conway, SC. Public land. Spot-and-stalk hunting. Primitive camping on a river. Lots of miles on foot. It’s about as much fun as you can have with your pants on. We’ve got room for a couple more. DM me if you want to come.

Mark and I now do our calls while rucking.
I’m 43 days into: - no alcohol - no ordering out for dinner - no junk food - no pizza (this is by far the hardest) - exercising every day The main thing I’ve been trying to do is lose weight, but I realized something way more important I wasn’t expecting All I was doing when I decided to get drunk when the weekend came, or hitting the easy button and getting DoorDash instead of making dinner.. Was taking shortcuts to avoid pain and discomfort. I’ve already noticed way more clearly what my trigger points are for anxiety and stress And now I’m resolving my issues w much more clarity and I feel like a more resilient person I said I’d do this for 75 days but I may do longer Cc @pinpulleddrmf LFG

Asking candidates to send a video is the best hiring filter in the world. More than 50% won't send one. The ones who do, show you how they present themselves before an interview.

People ask me how much elk hunting I actually get to do myself. How many elk I’ve hunted recently. The reality is I typically hunt elk one time a year for myself, if I’m lucky. And that’s almost always a cow hunt. This time I was able to share it with my son and wife. It was an incredible experience. It’s always interesting to introduce kids to this. My kids are obviously familiar with this world because of my profession, but it’s still not easy for them, particularly when it comes to big game. I’m now just getting out of the mountains after 8 days away from my family. I’m the first to admit that because of what I’ve chosen to do for a living, I’m away from my family too much. However, I think every man should spend some time away from his kids and wife. Ideally in a landscape that is physically and mentally challenging, because it gives you an opportunity to reflect and have gratitude for what you have at home. I know this might sound insane to some of you, but I think it’s an important reality.

My favorite organization in the military by far. Working with these guys was a blessing.
The US Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron (24th STS) is the service’s elite Tier 1 Special Mission Unit under JSOC, based at Pope Field in North Carolina. Drawn from the top Combat Controllers (CCTs), Pararescuemen (PJs), Special Reconnaissance, and Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) operators, these airmen rarely deploy as a standalone squadron. Instead, they embed with units like Delta Force and DEVGRU to provide critical airpower integration, joint terminal attack control (JTAC), personnel recovery, and battlefield medical expertise on the nation’s most sensitive and high-risk missions. Known for their “First There” ethos and quiet professionalism, 24th STS operators have supported operations from the streets of Mogadishu to modern counter terrorism campaigns, earning a reputation as indispensable enablers who bring precision air support and life-saving capabilities to the tip of the spear.

I was leading Heinz Ketchup when Dip N Squeeze came out. It was a massive upgrade from ketchup packets. Consumers LOVED it. Problem was we couldn’t get any of the big fast-food players on board. Dip N Squeeze was 3-5x (I forget the exact numbers) more expensive than packets, and they were free for customers. The key question was “does having Dip N Squeeze drive more volume?”, thus justifying the incremental cost. It was nearly impossible to prove. Every penny matters to these operators, so every sales meeting was the same. “We love it, but no.” Chick Fil A was the only yes. They didn’t need “proof”. They operated under the assumption simply giving their customers a better experience would pay off in the long run. Incremental cost be damned. Their conviction was impressive. They viewed every decision thru the lens of their customer. A much different approach from the other big players. I assume they treated countless other decisions the same way. This was ~15 years ago. CFA has been on quite the run since. (separate but related, I believe being a private co is a massive competitive advantage for CFA)
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Dan Reese claims he "was leading Heinz Ketchup when Dip N Squeeze came out" ~2011, but has described himself as an MBA intern at Heinz then. Reports show Chick-fil-A and Dairy Queen used the packets early on, with others testing. x.com/DanReese21/sta… cbsnews.com/news/reinvente… linkedin.com/in/dan-reese-3… codypeakadv.com/about-us/dan-r…

This is why I say that Level 4 ($1M-$10M) is the no man's land of wealth. At some point you could work twice as hard and it barely makes a dent.

Wilderness horseback elk hunting is the apex of elk hunting. And it always will be. There are 1,000 other hunts I could do every year that are easier and more of a slam dunk on the guiding front. But I'll always do at least one real wilderness elk hunt. They sharpen the sword. Great clients. Great adventures. #PursuitWithCliff

@pinpulleddrmf looks like he just got 90 days clean. I look like his sponsor who says things like “one day at a time, brother” but just relapsed on Zyn and black coffee. @CliffGry looks like he’s been awake since 2009 and has opinions about outboard motors.
