Martin Hairer, one of the other members of AGMAI (the advisory group on mathematics and AI), has written a post on the Proofs and Prompts blog that will I hope clarify what our purpose is. The rest of the blog is highly recommended too. proofsandprompts.com/2026/09…

Why should we care whether humans still understand mathematics if AI can solve the problems for us? Fair question. But we can say this at least: Historically, understanding has been a route to predictive power — with enormous benefits for our lives. nytimes.com/2026/09/22/scien…

While walking to work, I just had a chat with ChatGPT to make sure I understood what the claimed singular solution to Navier-Stokes would mean *physically.* Here's a tweet thread it generated for me. Hope you find it helpful. (I rewrote it a bit to clarify what's surprising.)

"I present the case for total opposition to the use of artificial intelligence in mathematics." = a view you don't often hear on X. But I am looking forward to reading it carefully, and if you care about math and AI, I encourage you to do the same. arxiv.org/pdf/2608.02859

Niels Henrik Abel (5 August 1802–6 April 1829) was born on this day, August 5th. Abel was one of history's most remarkable mathematicians. As the French mathematician Charles Hermite famously said: "Abel has left mathematicians enough to keep them busy for five hundred years."1/5

Lothar Collatz was botd in 1910. He is most famous for the as yet unproven conjecture named after him: start from any positive integer n then construct a number sequence such that if the previous number is even, the next term must be one half the previous; if the previous term is odd, the next term is three times the previous + 1. The conjecture states that no matter what n we begin with, the sequence will always reach 1, it has been tested for all n up to approx 10^14. Example: start from 6, you get 6, 3, 10, 5, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.

Today is March 18. #OTD in 1690 mathematician Christian Goldback was born. Best known for the Goldbach Conjecture, which states that every even natural number greater than 2 is the sum of two prime numbers (which he wrote in a letter to Euler). Remains unproven.
