Everyone knows how Captain Kim Campbell flew her crippled A-10 Warthog home from Baghdad on steel cables on April 7, 2003.
Almost nobody knows what she did twenty-four hours later, or what happened in her exact same squadron seventeen years to the day after her flight.
When Campbell touched down in Kuwait with zero hydraulics and over one hundred and fifty shrapnel holes in her tail, engineers inspected aircraft number 81-0987 and realized the frame was twisted beyond repair.
Today, that battle-scarred Warthog sits mounted on steel pedestals at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, pitched upward as if still climbing out of Baghdad.
Before sending the jet home, her maintenance crew cut a piece of shredded aluminum skin from the damaged tail and mounted it on a wooden plaque that Campbell still keeps on her wall.
Why did she not take a week off after cheating death?
The very next morning, on April 8, 2003, an Iraqi surface-to-air missile shot down fellow A-10 pilot Major Jim Meger over Baghdad.
Without hesitation, Campbell strapped into a different A-10 and flew right back into the same anti-aircraft fire over Baghdad as a combat search-and-rescue escort to help bring her brother pilot home.
She later said simply that the rescue pilots had been ready for her the day before, so she was going to be there for them.
Exactly seventeen years later to the calendar day, on April 7, 2020, history repeated itself inside Campbell's old unit, the 75th Fighter Squadron.
Captain Taylor Bye was diving her A-10C over Georgia when her thirty-millimeter cannon suffered a catastrophic malfunction.
The blast ripped the gun-bay panels off the fuselage, tore the glass cockpit canopy clean off the jet at three hundred and fifty miles per hour, and crippled the landing gear.
Instead of ejecting and letting a fourteen-million-dollar aircraft crash, Bye lowered her seat deep inside the twelve-hundred-pound titanium bathtub to shield her face from the howling windblast.
Peering barely over the instrument glare shield with no nose wheel and no canopy, she belly-landed the Warthog on its protruding main tires without a scratch, and flew the repaired jet again the following year.
An A-10 pilot sums up the machine in five words: I am old, not obsolete.

The indomitable girl who captured him was waiting for him thirty years later
On September 21, 1965, a 17-year-old Vietnamese girl named Nguyễn Thị Kim Lai was photographed escorting an enormous American airman through the countryside. His hands were tied behind his back. His head was bowed. She was carrying a rifle.
His name was William Andrew Robinson. He was 22, a helicopter mechanic and flight engineer in the US Air Force. The previous day his helicopter had been shot down during a mission to rescue another American airman.
Kim Lai was tiny. She weighed 37 kilograms. She had only finished seventh grade before joining the local militia. Her home province, Hà Tĩnh, was being bombed relentlessly by American aircraft.
According to her recollection, she discovered Robinson hiding among the rocks in a forest. Frightened by his enormous size, she fired three warning shots. He surrendered. Other militia members arrived and tied his hands.
A photographer named Phan Thoan captured the extraordinary contrast between the two.
The photograph became famous throughout Vietnam. It appeared on postage stamps. A celebrated Vietnamese poet wrote a poem about it. The image travelled around the world, becoming a symbol of a small country resisting a superpower.
Robinson was taken to prison.
He spent 2,703 days in captivity. Seven years, four months and twenty-three days. Much of it in isolation, enduring brutal conditions and torture. He was finally released on February 12, 1973.
Kim Lai became a nurse. She married, had three children and eventually became a grandmother.
Thirty years after their first encounter, in September 1995, she was playing with her grandchildren at a neighbour's house when someone came to tell her that foreigners were looking for her.
She returned home.
Standing there was William Andrew Robinson.
He had come back to Vietnam with a Japanese documentary crew. He had apparently wanted to find her for years but had never been able to afford the journey.
She recognised him immediately.
According to her recollection, he approached and embraced her before she could greet him.
They talked about their lives. Their families. Everything that had happened since those few minutes in a Vietnamese forest.
They even returned to the place where he had been captured.
Robinson reportedly expressed the hope that there would never be another photograph like theirs.
There is another photograph of them, taken during that reunion.
She is looking up at him. Smiling. He is standing beside her, still towering over her. No handcuffs. No rifle.
With no US government throwing away the youth of its own citizens to forcefully decide the future of Vietnam both can stand tall side by side.

Ever heard of the Oshkosh M1070? It’s the Army’s tank hauler, and it might be the baddest truck Uncle Sam owns.
Back in Desert Storm, the Army was hauling its Abrams tanks with the old Oshkosh M911, and it was struggling with the weight. So Oshkosh built something bigger, and the M1070 went into production in July 1992.
It’s eight wheel drive, pulling a trailer rated to carry around 70 tons. Loaded, the whole rig can gross around 230,000 pounds. That’s about three of my trucks at the legal limit.
And under the hood of the original? A Detroit 8V92. Yep, the same two stroke screamer a lot of us old guys ran back in the day. Somewhere out there, a soldier was hauling a tank and listening to that same Detroit howl.
The newer A1 model swapped in a 700 horse Cat C18 and a 7 speed Allison automatic. It even has central tire inflation, so the driver can air the tires up or down from the cab depending on the ground.
The Abrams gets all the glory. But that tank isn’t going anywhere without a truck driver. 🇺🇸🚛

GILA, ORANG INI CUMA GESER ALIS SEDIKIT, SATU DUNIA LANGSUNG KETAWA. 😭🤣
Lihat Rowan Atkinson. Awalnya duduk dengan ekspresi serius, kelihatan kayak profesor yang mau ngumumin hasil penelitian. Beberapa detik kemudian, wajahnya berubah jadi Mr. Bean yang kita kenal sejak kecil.
Nggak perlu kostum, nggak perlu dialog panjang.

Memang tabiat keturunan, katanya. Sudah dibantu Joko masuk kabinet, sekarang AHY malah getol mendorong Mas Gibran mundur dari jabatan Wapres. AHY, AHY, nggak tahu terima kasih kamu, Nak. Ambisinya jadi presiden besar banget, kayak bapakmu, SBY.

Prihatin ya, Pak SBY?
IHSG & rupiah anjlok, tdk prihatin.
Karhutla mengamuk di Kalimantan, tdk prihatin. Antrean BBM mengular, tdk prihatin.
Harga bahan pokok meroket, juga tdk prihatin.
Jangan: keprihatinan Bapak hanya muncul klo menguntungkan Demokrat & kepentingan politik anak sendiri. Rakyat kapan dipikirkan, Pak?
Kok jadi begini negara kita. Kok begini liar politik kita.

Naval engineers who inspected the photograph of the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole in October 2000 said that almost any warship built in the twentieth century would have broken her keel and sunk within an hour after taking a hit like that.
A suicide boat packed with hundreds of pounds of military C-4 explosives had detonated directly against the port side of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer DDG-67 in Aden Harbor, Yemen.
The blast tore a jagged crater forty feet high and sixty feet wide straight through two-inch steel hull plating right at the waterline.
Seawater roared into the main engine rooms, snuffing out the ship's electrical generators, severing the main firefighting pipes, and killing seventeen American sailors in an instant while wounding thirty-nine others.
In seconds, the eight-thousand-ton destroyer listed to port, trapped in a foreign harbor with no lights, no air conditioning, and no power.
Below deck, the temperature inside the pitch-black, fuel-soaked compartments climbed past one hundred and fifteen degrees Fahrenheit.
Why did the USS Cole not sink to the bottom of the harbor that afternoon?
First, because American naval architects designed the Arleigh Burke class out of all-steel construction enhanced with seventy tons of Kevlar armor liners and angled bulkheads built from the hard lessons of the Cold War.
Second, and even more important, because her surviving crew of nineteen- and twenty-year-old American men and women refused to let her go under.
Wearing headlamps in the suffocating dark, young sailors waded chest-deep into black water mixed with toxic jet fuel and sewage to rescue their trapped shipmates with hydraulic jaws and bare hands.
When rising water threatened to buckle the remaining steel bulkheads and flood the rest of the ship, damage-control teams sawed heavy wooden four-by-four timbers by hand and wedged them against the groaning steel walls to hold back the ocean.
For ninety-six sleepless hours, sailors formed bucket brigades of fuel cans down scorching ladders to keep portable gasoline dewatering pumps running day and night.
They kept their crippled destroyer afloat until the heavy-lift ship Blue Marlin carried her home to Mississippi, where American shipbuilders rebuilt her hull and returned USS Cole to the fleet stronger than ever.

Surrounded by 300 enemy fighters, he rallied a counterattack.
On October 3, 2009, Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha and roughly 50 fellow soldiers at Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan’s Nuristan Province faced an overwhelming assault by more than 300 Taliban fighters.
Despite being wounded by shrapnel, Romesha rallied his men, destroyed enemy positions, directed close air support that devastated the attackers, and repeatedly exposed himself to intense fire to protect the wounded and recover the bodies of fallen comrades. His actions helped prevent the outpost from being overrun.
In February 2013, President Obama presented Romesha with the Medal of Honor, recognizing his conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.
