87% of American adults with CKD don’t know they have it. That’s from the HHS Kidney Care National Plan (2026), which calls kidney disease one of the nation’s most consequential chronic conditions.
The plan’s first early-detection recommendation: HHS should consider a systematic evidence review of screening in at-risk groups. Why? Screening costs hit now, while the savings arrive years later.
Early CKD is silent. Two tests help find it: uACR shows whether the kidneys are leaking albumin, often the earliest sign. eGFR shows how well they filter. Together they place a patient on the KDIGO risk matrix.
