Uh oh. I sent an e-mail to someone at the school (not a teacher) with a Dear (Given Name) if I may, and received a Dear Ms. Stallings response. I may not!

It’s not just centaurs!
From a chamber tomb near the Tomb of the Five Chairs in the Banditaccia necropolis, an amphora with a satyr brandishing a tree (apparently followed by or chasing a man). #VillaGiulia

I taught the argument of this paper in tutorials for many years on the assumption someone else had come up with it. Eventually I decided to look up who it was, only to discover, by process of elimination, that that person was in fact me during Finals revision. Way to feel old.

Amazing to find out there are folks so nostalgia blinded to take the position, "I liked the lead poisoning, especially when it came with a menial, low-wage job."
The lead poisoning was better, I suppose, when you also got to order around a low-wage worker.

I’ve written about Latin & Greek as secret languages in the modern world, so it’s rather lovely to receive an email from a retired colleague who says something disparaging about a famous classicist (who must remain nameless) using the Greek alphabet for the negative comment!

Here's the Washington Post's front page on January 7, 2021. Four years later, the paper, famous for its tagline "Democracy Dies in Darkness," doesn't want to take a stand on who is fit to be president.

Apparently, even the Capitoline Venus gets judged.
‘Hmm. I don’t know, girl …’ 🤔
📸 me

ALT Photo of the rear of the Capitoline Venus - a Venus ‘Pudica’, modest, covering her genitals and breasts - in a mirror on the wall of her small octagonal room. You see her back and ample rear, but also a statue of a seated Roman woman in the hall, looking directly at her, hand on her chin, looking very judgy.
