She also researched historical material, including Working Girls, a photographic collection documenting women involved in prostitution, to better understand the world Cathy inhabits.
What's important is that the expressionless look isn't simply a lack of performance. It's part of how Cathy is portrayed: a woman whose relationship with vulnerability, desire and human connection is deeply complicated.
And that's what makes this role particularly challenging for Pugh. She's not playing a conventional romantic heroine. She's bringing one of Steinbeck's most unsettling characters to life.
