VIDEO | Reacting on the Election Commission ECI-SIR row, former Election Commissioner OP Rawat says, "I would say is that this is a very unfortunate situation, something like this has hardly ever occurred within the Election Commission. Having served there myself, I always observed that decisions were made unanimously, and whenever there was a difference of opinion, consensus was reached to maintain unity. It seems the public's trust in the institution is breaking down entirely. An institution that people trusted to deliver free, fair, and credible elections has created such a 'Frankenstein' through SIR that voters everywhere are filled with apprehension. This is not good and is very unfortunate for our democracy."
"I believe it would have been better if both our distinguished Election Commissioners had not waited for ten months. The Election Commission provides complete independence, and if you feel that something wrong is taking place, you can immediately go public. The Court questioned how EVMs were deployed across those 50 polling stations, nullified the election there, and ordered fresh voting using ballot papers. The manner in which Form 6 has been amended is entirely wrong, improper, and illegal..."

Power without accountability is a licence for abuse. The police answer to the people, not the other way around.

On Jan 10, 2018, a little girl allegedly disappeared in Kathua district of Jammu province. Even before her body was recovered a week later, a sinister narrative was launched alleging that the girl was abducted, gang raped and killed by 'RSS-minded' Hindus in a Hindu temple. Talib Hussain, a PDP-Hurriyat activist with criminal antecedents led the campaign, in which Patwari Sanji Ram was declared as the 'mastermind'.
