POLITICHE DEI TRASPORTI: SENSO COMUNE vs. BUON SENSO.
🧵

A sad note on how much business depends on favors from Washington these days.

No! Ada! No!

Imagine if you had to work 6 hours to afford just one hour of artificial light. That was how much it took in 1800.
By 1880, that dropped to 15 minutes.
By 1950, just 8 seconds.
Today? About 0.2 seconds.
Light was once an expensive luxury. Now, it's so affordable that we barely think twice about flipping a light switch.
That's the extraordinary story of human progress. Innovation has made things that were once out of reach accessible to billions of people.
And it's a powerful reminder of how much better life can get.
@mattwridley, author of The Rational Optimist, explains why we have good reason to be optimistic about the future.
Come è andata a finire?

The miracle of economic growth.
India saw about 496 million people lifted out of poverty between 2011 and 2023 in one of the world’s fastest declines in this metric, the World Bank said, although the gains remain uneven. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Demanding economic growth has become unfashionable among some people in Europe.
Instead they speak of a “cost of living crisis”.
But it’s really one and the same.
Economic growth means that incomes rise relative to prices.
Economic growth means that the things we need become more affordable.

They were more strict than what is in place, but less strict than the climate movement’s preferred policies in which a council of scientists is given suprademocratic powers in order to impose binding emissions restrictions, so he was basically a climate denier.

Bill Nordhaus died. People remember him for his climate change work. I remember him for these two papers
The first shows that innovators capture only a tiny share of the fruits of their innovations. I often tell people that shows something about property rights. If only 4% of gains went to innovators and we got so much innovation, what if property rights were tightened? What if they could appropriate 5% instead? How much more innovation would we get ?
The second is that living standards are not well represented by counting military spending (among many other things). After all, tanks and aircraft carriers are not consumer goods. Their value is not the cost-value (which is how government output is calculated) but rather the option value and the flow of deterrence. I expanded on Nordhaus (and others) in this piece (Geloso, V., & Reilly, C. S. (2026). A Defense-Adjusted National Accounting of the US Economy and Its Implications, 1791-2023. The Review of Austrian Economics, 39(1), 19-50). And thus I owe a debt to Nordhaus.
Both are underappreciated great works
