Did you know? There was a carnival game in America where a Black man put his head through a hole in a sheet and white customers paid money to throw baseballs at his face. It ran at county fairs for roughly sixty years. Men died playing it. It was called the African Dodger. Also "Hit the Coon." Also "African Dip." The man was allowed to duck. That was the game — his only defence was his neck. Three balls for a nickel. Prizes for a hit. Newspapers carried accounts of players knocked unconscious, blinded in one eye, and killed outright by a ball to the temple. The reporting treated it as an unfortunate accident at the fair, the way you would report a bad fall at the rodeo. It was ordinary family entertainment. There are photographs of children in the queue. It faded in the 1940s and 50s and was replaced — directly, at the same fairgrounds — by the dunk tank, which is the same game with water instead of a skull.
