I joined Geoff Wodtke on the Inequality Podcast (@UCStoneCenter) to talk about perceptions of illegality, immigration attitudes, and politics. Really enjoyed the conversation.
What characteristics make someone assume a person is undocumented? René Flores studies how people perceive immigrants. His research tells an important story, especially in today’s political climate. Listen to his conversation on The Inequality Podcast → bit.ly/3Owuv2A
Flores said politicians frequently vilify religious or ethnic groups to distract from issues such as the economy or an unpopular war with Iran. The same happened in the 2018 midterm election, when Republicans spoke about caravans from Central America flooding the country, he said
New: Since becoming the GOP nominee for the railroad commission, @bofrench has posted twice as much about immigration & Islam than about the job he’s running for — regulating the oil & gas industry
Those posts were me with silence from the GOP

Ethnic Attrition Among Hispanics and Asians in the U.S

Why did the U.S. multiracial population nearly triple between 2010 and 2020? Did cultural norms around racial identification shift? In a new paper, @IlanaMVentura and I find that this surge is largely due to changes in @uscensusbureau 2020 data processing, esp for Hispanics.
🚨New paper alert 🚨
The multiracial population in the United States grew 276% between 2010 and 2020, and now represents over 10% of the population. In a new paper out in the @RussellSageFdn Journal, @rd_flowers and I explore this sudden boom: 🧵

Excited to share my first published article in @SREJournal! Through a legal case in 🇪🇨, I show how Indigenous communities play an active role redefining what it means to be Indigenous, expanding the Indigenous-mestizo boundary, and furthering their rights.

Super valuable new study that randomly assigns 7k+ Americans to old vs. new Census race formats. Among many interesting patterns:
1. White & "some other race" %'s ⬇️ by 6 and 4 pts.
2. No change in overall Hisp and Black %'s.
3. Small but detectable ⬇️ Black + Hisp responses.
NEW: René D. Flores, Edward Telles, Ilana M. Ventura, "New OMB’s Race and Ethnicity Standards Will Affect How Americans Self-Identify" sociologicalscience.com/arti…
In 2024, the OMB approved major changes to the ethnic/racial self-identification questions used by all federal agencies, including the Census. Do these changes shape Americans’ ID choices? Edward Telles, @IlanaMVentura, and I address this question: 🧵
sociologicalscience.com/arti…
We find that the combined question decreases the % of Americans identifying as white & as some other race. We ID the key mechanism driving the effects: Hispanics decrease their identification in other categories when a Hispanic category is available in the combined q format (4/5)
This results in statistically significant decreases in key minority populations, including Afro-Latinos and indigenous Latinos (5/5). @SociologicalSci @ASAnews

More than 1 million refugees migrated to Germany in 2015-2016.
How did this affect Germans’ exclusionary beliefs & behaviors?

Our new @AMJPublicHealth editorial with Ariela Schachter @ArielaSchachter and Neda Maghbouleh @nedasoc on the need to collect and disaggregate self-Identification data for Middle Eastern and North African Americans. #MENA
A new @AMJPublicHealth editorial by Prof. @nedasoc highlights how the absence of a #MENA category in federal data has hidden disparities within the community, making the collection of self-identified data key to addressing health & social inequalities. buff.ly/3NVNjF3

New paper with Linda Zhao @UChicagoSoc now out at @ReadDemography. We show general patterns of assimilation in terms of networks and identities at the 3rd generation in England, Germany and the Netherlands, with substantial heterogeneity by ethnic origins. 👇
In “Grandchildren of Immigrants in Western Europe,” Linda Zhao & @LGDrouhot employ data from 3 nations & find that the 3rd gen enters “mainstream networks while...retreating from ties with their origin ethnic group.” @UChicagoSoc @UniUtrecht @PopulationCU ow.ly/hoVh50QXXoV
