Many of you don't understand how serious this is, so let me break it down. In computer science there is a famous kind of puzzle called 3-SAT. You are given a long list of yes-or-no switches and a set of rules about how they must be arranged, and you have to find a combination that satisfies every rule. The obvious way to solve it is to try every combination, but each new switch doubles the number of possibilities, so a puzzle with a few hundred switches would take longer than the age of the universe to brute force. For decades, the smartest people in the field found clever tricks that made this a little faster, but every trick still hit the same wall: the time required kept exploding as the puzzle grew. About 25 years ago, two computer scientists, Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi, working with Francis Zane, turned that wall into a formal idea. They proposed the Exponential Time Hypothesis, which says this explosion is not a failure of human cleverness but a law of nature. No algorithm, however brilliant, will ever solve 3-SAT without the time blowing up exponentially. Nobody could prove it, but almost everyone believed it, and it became one of the foundations of modern computer science. Researchers used it as a measuring stick. If you could show that solving some other problem quickly would also crack 3-SAT quickly, you had shown that problem was hopelessly hard too. Hundreds of papers, across scheduling, graphs, logic and much more, rest on this one assumption. Now an internal AI model at OpenAI claims to have broken it. It says it found an algorithm that solves these puzzles meaningfully faster than the hypothesis allows, and it has checked the proof in a computer verification system called Lean. And here is the remarkable part: the very people who proposed the hypothesis, Impagliazzo and Paturi, along with MIT's Ryan Williams, are now leading the public review of whether a machine has disproved their own idea. So what happens next? If the disproof holds, a large part of theoretical computer science has to be revisited. Every result that said "this problem cannot be solved faster, assuming ETH" loses its foundation, and researchers will have to work out which of those walls were real and which were simply where we stopped looking. It does not mean everything becomes easy. The new algorithm is still slow in absolute terms and this is not the famous P versus NP problem being solved. But it means our map of what is possible was wrong in a place we were very confident about, and it was an AI that redrew it. If the disproof fails, the hypothesis survives and the field breathes out, but we will still have watched an AI produce serious, checkable work on one of the deepest questions in the discipline, closely enough that the founders of the idea had to take it seriously. Either way, something has shifted.
An internal model at OpenAI has produced a claimed refutation of ETH! Russell Impagliazzo, Mohan Paturi, and I have been asked to help organize an open and independent examination of this claim. 1/4

This is a documentary about gender ideology in Australia. From the perspective of people who are gender critical, many of whom have suffered dire consequences for speaking up. It should be fascinating.

Best anecdote in Carol Thatcher's book about her father is when Sir Denis boarded a train at Paddington in which the only empty compartment was reserved for Rosewood Psychiatric Hospital. Denis travelled alone and in comfort as far as Reading when "all these chaps piled in", accompanied by a male nurse, who counted them before the train moved off. 'One, two, three, four ... who are you?" "I'm the Prime Minister's husband." "Six, seven, eight, nine..."

WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners. Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads. Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. Got a root shell. then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems. This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.
i own a relatively new (2025) samsung tv. i kept getting weirdly targeted ads. i tried reversing the firmware but it was aes encrypted and no keys unless tear it apart and do uart/jtag magic. zero days it is. root shell on new samsung TVs! discovered PRIVACY HORROR. write up?

Indeed Bernie. Bodies lying all over the place here in Europe. No, wait. The 32,000 is not an actual body count. It’s the result of modelling by Imperial College on the basis of several dubious assumptions. People did die of heat this summer. They usually do when it gets v hot e.g 1976, 2003. The exact number is not clear. But even if 32,000 was a real figure we know for sure many, many more will die of cold this winter. They always do.
Climate change killed 32,000+ people in Europe this summer. Trump believes this crisis is a "hoax." Republicans in Congress are following their "Great Leader.” NO to Trump’s fossil fuel agenda. YES to creating millions of jobs by moving our energy system away from fossil fuels.

This has gone viral in France. The wonderful black woman is a credit to France. The smug, haute-bourgeois blonde an embarrassment.
“Your shops that got looted were nice, okay, but we’re starving.” People looked this girl up and her dad is a corporate executive who worked for Shell. What a smug psychopath.

As always @jk_rowling nails it. “It’s true, of course, that trans activism doesn’t impact all women negatively. In fact, the more privileged you are, the less it tends to affect you, and the more it might benefit you. Aside from an avalanche of death, rape and torture threats, it hasn’t noticeably affected my life. Nor does it hurt wealthy women who repost the vogueish mantras while sitting in dressing rooms guarded by private security guards. It doesn’t hurt women in the upper echelons of media, publishing and academia, who don’t need a changing room at work and who feel a snobbish disdain for working class women who don’t want to strip off in front of heterosexual males who’ve ‘identified’ into the women’s changing room. Trans activism doesn’t hurt headline-hungry female politicians whose attitude to women’s rights is ‘whatever is good for me personally’. On the contrary, trans activism has been good for those women. It’s fashionable, and keeps them popular with their progressive tribe, and costs them, personally, absolutely nothing.”

There are five separate ongoing security incidents referenced in this list

You take climate change seriously, support cutting emissions and publish research consistent with IPCC assessments. Then you find yourself labelled a “climate denier”. That happened to @RogerPielkeJr. He studied losses from hurricanes and other weather disasters. Those losses are rising—but how much comes from climate change, and how much from having more people and more valuable property in harm’s way? His findings were not well received. In his lecture at Clintel, he describes the political attacks that followed, including from the Obama White House. He also walks through what the science says about extreme weather. Heatwaves, floods, hurricanes and droughts each tell a different story. And he explains why he challenges the attribution studies behind so many headlines. His full first lecture, recorded on 11 October in Driebergen, the Netherlands, is now online. Around 57 minutes, with clear explanations and plenty of personal experience. Worth making time for. 🎥 Watch via the link in the first reply.

Bridget Philipson MP should not be writing in the Independent that no parent will be prosecuted for tense and difficult conversations with children when the conversion bill she is promoting permits for exactly that to be prosecuted. Time to end this misinformation from govt.
Replying to @MensNetwork1
3/ It is also not accurate to offer reassurances to parents in the terms adopted by the Secretary of State. There is no “carve out” for parents. There is no parental defence. This can be privately prosecuted. The predecessor minister anticipated parental prosecutions.

Since I wrote and filed this last night Fintan Slye, who’s remuneration is almost £1m/year to run state-owned Neso, the organisation responsible for managing Britain’s power system, told staff he was “disappointed” in himself and “should have fixed” the problems before an independent report raised them. There’s still a widespread feeling in Neso that he puts carrying out the government’s net zero wishes/obsessions way above the concerns of his staff.

This has to be one of the most extraordinary examples of what happens when gender ideology gets into the newsroom. The Daily Mail is reporting that transgender actor Hunter Schafer has undergone “gender-affirming bottom surgery”. Yet the journalist repeatedly describes Schafer as “she”, calls him an “actress” and claims he “transitioned to female” as a teenager. But if Schafer had already become female, what exactly was the surgery affirming? And why is a journalist reporting on surgery involving male genitalia seemingly unable to acknowledge that the patient is male? This isn’t about being unkind to anyone. It’s about the language journalists use to describe biological reality. Because when journalists start treating the idea that human beings can change sex as established fact, rather than distinguishing sex from gender identity, they’re no longer simply reporting what happened. They’re adopting a contested belief as the framework for their reporting. Link below 👇

Missing from this conversation is the fact that last week food merchants in Gaza were going on strike because they were so angry at the huge margins Hamas is extracting from them. Why is Hamas never mentioned?
One of the main suppliers of food aid to Gaza, the UN’s World Food Programme, says it’s being forced to “drastically reduce lifesaving assistance” because of a funding shortage. Acting exec director Carl Skau is asked if he is pushing the Israeli government hard enough.
