Just learning about SoR or Structured Literacy? Here is what you need to learn: What are the foundations of literacy, the continuum of skills for each block, the structure for teaching each block, and how to assess each block. Over the next week I will be covering these topics.

What are your schools/systems using to screen students for #dyslexia in the PreK-2 grade band? *Please retweet to help this reach more of #edutwitter. I would really appreciate the feedback from fellow educators.

I would also recommend that is you are at a traditional F&P that you start a year lower. It covers roughly the same material each year just at a faster pace as you go up levels. There is also more covered at the upper end of phonics as you go up levels

What I see most is students being able to read more words by sight than they have to sound out. We are using the book a grade below where our students are for remediation purposes.

#SoR Journey year2: A review of From Phonics to Reading by @wbny. After a quarter with our Title1 stds we have many students who are no longer at risk on DIBELS NWF and many others who are close. It has also had a moderate increase in both word reading and oral reading fluency.

Here's to all the teachers who are flying under the radar, not getting much attention. Their engaging lessons aren't on Twitter. Their cool interactions w/ kids aren't on Youtube. But they're still crushing it. They're making a difference for a lot of students. 🎙@Steelethoughts

#SoR Journey: LETRS training phonics chapter. We have made some huge changes away from F&P this year including changing small groups to phonics and decodable based. The smile on teachers faces when they heard the presenter saying exactly what they have changed to doing was great

With an emphasis on #SoR K-2 will be impacted quickly. We must not forget our friends in 3-8. They cannot wait for those younger kids who gain skills to roll through. They are going to need some accelerated phonics, fluency, and vocabulary instruction to help students “catch up”

When a word is orthographically mapped in the brain, meaning is instantly accessed when the written word is seen. Systematic, explicit instruction in the code, coupled with word meaning helps build a high level of orthographic mapping in our students’ language-reading brains.

The National Reading Panel's Report in 1999 correctly described what was wrong and how to fix it for the one-in-five with dyslexia. They also said a whole generation of children would be sacrificed to the notoriously slow-to-change culture of public education. They were right.

Universal screening helps us identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties and/or require enrichment. Diagnostic tools allow us to probe more deeply so we can deliver instruction that meets specific student strengths and needs. Data drives differentiation. ❤️

The Science of Reading is more than JUST phonics. It is teaching in a systematic and explicit approach using phonology, syntax, semantics, and morphology. It is understanding that our brains learn words in a process called orthographic mapping.
