I know it’s been said so many times, but I just love @Waymo! I have to admit when Larry and Sergey would obsess over self-driving cars, I was skeptical, but it’s just so great.

SF voters on robotaxis: Sept 2023: 44% support, 51% oppose July 2025: 67% support, 29% oppose What changed? People rode them. Robotaxi opposition peaks before anyone has ridden. D.C., New York and Massachusetts are deciding at peak fear and minimum experience.

Surprise: An anti-Waymo astroturf group sounds like it is quite obviously a front for Uber, with whom it shares "public affairs" consultants in New York and Pennsylvania. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…

Uber is so fucking shady. The so called “People’s First Transportation Alliance” is actually funded by Uber. A more accurate name would have been the Uber First Transportation Alliance. They are hiding the fact that they’re funding this anti-autonomy group, and listed a bunch of “founding members” of the group that had no clue their names were being used! They just organized a protest against a bill that would bring autonomous driving to DC in 2028, demanding human drivers be required well past then. DC is such a critical city for autonomy, because we need congress to be able to try the technology for themselves. The fact that they can’t is holding federal autonomy legislation back. Fuck Uber and everyone involved in this group. They want people to die so they can make money continuing to exploit their drivers.

Using raw lidar data is exactly the same as showing raw RGB camera data for every pixel and saying "tell me what you see here". Let's not deceive the public. Here's a 100% lidar-only scene. Let the people decide for themselves what they see.

Exactly as I predicted. Driverless capability = table stakes Operations are EVERYTHING.
Tesla is making solid progress with Robotaxi but I've gotta say the last 18 months have been a total vindication for the "Tesla isn't doing anything special and will have to do the same city-by-city slog as Waymo" thesis.

Waymos are really safe (80-95% safer than humans depending on the metric), but they also seem to be getting *safer* over time. This is the worst they'll ever be. A quick analysis of the police-reported crash rates in three cities from Waymo's published safety data.
