Imho Pilate is an allegory of neutrality in the face of injustice.
Despite knowing full well that Jesus is innocent, he couldn't bring himself to declare Jesus innocent because of the threat of rebellion. He was tasked to keep the peace, and did so, albeit unwillingly.
Pontius Pilate is one of those interesting side characters in history.
Roman prefect of Judea, Samaria and Idumea at the time of Jesus.
Had to keep the peace in a very unstable and rebellious backwater province.
He had no legions under his command, just 3,000 Auxilia. A mix of infantry and cavalry, recruited locally.
He tried bringing Roman military insignia into Jerusalem but backed down because of a riot.
Took gold from the Temple to pay for an aqueduct, also causing a riot.
Constantly stamping down attempted rebellions.
When Jesus - another apparent troublemaker - appears before him, he just wants to do what it takes to keep the peace.
I don't think he's entirely a bad guy.
