Background subagents in Claude Code now use less of your usage limit. A running subagent updates its status line every 30 seconds, and each update used to re-read its whole conversation. Now Haiku 5.5 writes it from short notes instead, so each update costs about 99% less.

Pennsylvania is split in half by two gas stations, and this February they finally met face to face. West side of the state, it's Sheetz. East side, around Philly, it's Wawa. People will argue about this at weddings. In Japan we had a battle like this in 1600. Sekigahara. East against West. It decided who ran the country for the next 260 years. So when I heard Sheetz was opening its first store in the Philly suburbs, right across the road from a Wawa, I had to be there. Limerick, Pennsylvania. February 12. Eight in the morning. Here's how the battle went. The Sheetz gave away free coffee. The Wawa across the street also gave away free coffee. A county commissioner gave a speech at the Sheetz grand opening wearing a Wawa hat. The very first guy in line told everybody he was a diehard Wawa fan. I didn't know which side to stand on. So I did what a samurai does when he owes loyalty to two houses. I got one coffee from each. And I drank them both, one in each hand, taking turns, so nobody would feel betrayed. Nobody asked what I was doing. A man in a Steelers jacket watched me for a while and nodded, like that was the correct way to handle it. "Smart. Sheetz for the made-to-order, Wawa for the hoagie. Don't let anybody tell you different." Then he lifted his cup at both buildings. "Here's the thing, buddy. In most states, gas station food is something you dare your friends to eat. Here we got two of 'em good enough to fight over."

Written account of Jesus rising from the dead identified in 2,000-year-old manuscript, study suggests trib.al/XFIwGJj
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This research compares later Greek, Latin, Arabic and Syriac copies to reconstruct what Josephus may have written around AD 93–94; it did not identify an account in a 2,000-year-old physical manuscript. joe.co.uk/news/ancient-j… wsjfreeexpression.substack.com/p/unlocking-th…

I did say we'd be releasing our models periodically...introducing Gemini 4 Carbon, our next frontier model. Following Argon's release just two weeks ago, Carbon shows the pace at which we’re pushing the frontier, it ranks #1 on the recently updated v5.0 of @ArtificialAnlys Intelligence Index at 59. It also leads across key cybersecurity evaluations scoring 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for finding vulnerabilities, 54.8% on ExploitGym for exploitation, and 71.0% on CWE-bench for patching. We’re seeing significant improvements in long-horizon tasks even compared to Argon, and we’ve strengthened frontier safeguards. As we did with Argon, we’re going to roll it out gradually + responsibly. Some trusted cyber defenders will get access starting this week. We'll be expanding it to more partners through our Fairwind Program, ahead of wider availability soon, so hang tight!

I've always believed that intelligence should come from simple, general building blocks that learn their own abstractions directly from raw data; in other words, the bitter lesson. I think we're finally seeing a real step towards AI that can learn from all data. Language modeling on raw bytes is a microcosm of this ideal, and to me it's a central problem in AI: if we can't build LLMs that learn end-to-end from bytes, how will we handle the rest of the world's data that we understand even less? Last year we introduced hierarchical networks (H-Nets) as a first step. Our new version finds up to 3-5x efficiency gains in controlled scaling law experiments, and at larger scale matches an open-source model trained on 11T tokens with ~10x less data and compute. The posts below walk through what we found and why we think it works.

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.
