My 12-year-old daughter discovered an entertainer she loves is Jewish. “Dad! They're Jewish! Can you interview them?” I didn’t ask. Their career is taking off. Being identified as Jewish will only damage them. The kindest thing Jewish News can do for a young Jew in the public eye is keep quiet about them being Jewish. I told my daughter they were busy. My daughter will learn the lesson all too soon: in today’s Britain, hide who you are.

I’ve written about the grim trend of people asking @JewishNewsUK to remove their names from old articles because they no longer want to be publicly identifiable as Jewish. This morning was the saddest yet. The children of a remarkable man, honoured by the late Queen, asked us to remove his obituary because it mentions them. Britain has been enriched for generations by stalwarts of our community who were proud to put their names to what they built, created and contributed. Now their children are asking for those names to disappear. The question is no longer whether British Jewish life is in retreat. It is how much of it will soon be left. This is not a country where my children can build their lives.
