Yes!! I noticed this during my time in academia too, which ultimately lead me to move into software engineering. But I also believe we can change this by providing tools that make it easier for researchers to find/use/share existing analysis code that they *want* to use.

The first principle of science is, and ALWAYS should be, the reproducibility. In other words, if you “make it work for the publication” and then it’s left to rot or not possible to be reproduced by someone else — I’m not sure you are really doing science.

I am extremely concerned about the culture in the scientific community where analyses and their respective code/scripts are made for single use. And secondly, I am also perplexed by the lack of internal validation and checks. We need to change this and lead by example.

I'm working with @ACCESS_NRI to find areas where we can make your life easier with web-based tools. If you work with ACCESS models and find any aspect of your workflow overly slow, difficult or just downright frustrating, please let us know here or via DM!

James Wilmot and Varvara Efremova with me at #Supramol24 @RACInational with our poster! Varvara is the unsung hero if #supramolecular #chemistry- she built "bindfit" @opendatafit and now she and James have almost completed the new version of opendatafit to launch later in 2024. – at Sydney, New South Wales

Exceptionally proud of Varvara and James acing at #eRESAU2022 ! Our supramolecular.org & @opendatafit #OpenScience platform has been a labour of love for me the last 7 years but the real brains behind it are @vrvrfrmv @jameswilmot2000 who do all the programming & beyond. /1
Congratulations to our supramolecular.org @opendatafit fantastic programmers Varvara and James @vrvrfrmv @jameswilmot2000 who presented our new opendata.fit platform at #eResAU2022 Great job team!

Following their highly commended poster, @vrvrfrmv & @jameswilmot2000 got together again to talk about the opendata.fit platform. This tool is very close to being deployed and ready for researchers to use. Gosh, they've spent time on the user interface, looking great!
Huge congratulations & well done ACCS WP6 team @jameswilmot2000 @vrvrfrmv for their highly commended poster featuring opendata.fit platform @PalliThordarson. If you want to hear more about their work, join us at #eResAU2022 for their talk today at 2.45pm. @ARDC_AU

This is a great collection of ideas. My addition would be to teach software design principles & encourage good architecture choices, a big factor in maintainability/reusability/interoperability of code bases - often lacking in scientific projects & leading to knowledge loss.
What would you teach in a course on ✨ research software engingeering ✨ #RSE #RSEng

Great article on the issues w/ software in sciences: "There is a reason why there is a long-running joke that half of the challenge of bioinformatics is installing software tools correctly, and the rest is just converting between different file formats" newscience.org/how-software-…

Just finished listening to this great talk by @vsoch about the origins of research software engineering as a career. I've apparently been working as an RSE since 2014 and last year I was super excited to find out there's a name for what I do and a whole community too!

Looks like the final talk is up (no Zoom logo!) and will put here for posterity. Thanks again @kehoste! youtu.be/FB2yV8TNnSw

It's a weird experience to be in this no man's land somewhere in between academia and industry but not quite fitting into either and it's felt like a very precarious career at times. Here's hoping RSEng keeps gaining recognition as a valuable role in academia.

Ok I’m finally giving in to this trend bc I’m usually terrible at this game and I’m proud of this one 😅 Wordle 221 2/6 ⬜⬜🟩🟩⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
