It's the biggest rugby league weekend of the year.
For those of us who write about the game, it's the week with the best stories to tell.
We've got fairytales, droughts, dramas, tactical breakdowns, the lot.

While the Knights are without key players through the middle, their right edge remains relatively in tact. Overall, Newcastle’s right edge defence has been one of the best all season accounting for only 30% of their total tries conceded.

Marker Policies On The Line
We see most teams send their first marker to the long side and second marker down the shortside.
The Newcastle Knights offered a prime example of what that looks like.

70% of set restarts are awarded by the 46th minute.
Brisbane have the worst net set restart count in the NRL, as well as a high rate of errors in their own half
It's not surprising they're behind early so often.
Brisbane have the worst net set restart and net total penalty mark after 13 rounds in the NRL this decade. Poor discipline is forcing them to consistently chase down leads

Magic Round 2026 was the third highest round in my data with nearly 30% of minutes played with a margin of more than three converted tries (18+). Previous high was Round 16, 2021.
Also over 17% of minutes this season played with 18+margin. Very normal areas.

Great thread on Deine Mariner.
Discussed on the pod last night - there’s nothing to the suggestions of mistreatment. The incidence rate of a thigh cork progressing to compartment syndrome is so low it isn’t even documented in literature - effectively it would be less than 0.1%.
Mariner played through a cork, which happens week in & week out in all contact sports. It just had a super rare complication. Thankfully he had excellent care to identify & treat it as quickly as possible.
