They pursued other avenues to get access to Calif's voter rolls, or to pressure Calif into cleaning up its voter rolls. DOJ Civil Rights Division has been pursuing this issue since 2025, and Calif was the first state where it sued to get access to them.
The effort that ended up with the 20,000 names began back in the summer. It went to court only after Calif rejected the REQUEST that Calif use the list to segregate ballots while it verified citizenship -- elibility to vote -- of the persons on the list.
I think the refusal by Calif to even look at the list was maybe surprising -- it was essentially a brazen confession by Calif that it knows and that ease of cleaning up the rolls would be exposed if it made use of the list.
California does not want to clean up the voting rolls.
I don't think anyone took seriously the idea that DOJ would win injunctive relief ahead of the election. But the lawsuit -- which will continue after the election -- revealed the brazenness with which Calif ignores that its "Honor System" registration and inability to challenge mail-in ballots on the basis fo eligibility make illegal voting an acceptable practice.
DOJ is going to amplify that fact after the election by going after and prosecuting every ineligible voter it can find -- and some state officials as well.
