I cannot recommend highly enough making as much of the world that surrounds you as you can. It is a source of mental stability that gets no love in a consumerist culture, but it is so important.
This just came up on my feed. Seven years ago I needed a little spoon so I could scoop salt out of a jar and sprinkle it on food as I cooked.
So I took a piece of mesquite firewood out of the pile. I made this in about an hour using a bandsaw, drill press with a burr bit and a lot of sanding.
No big deal. But I have used it daily since, which adds up to more than 2,000 uses, and God willing, I'll get more uses than that out of it in the days to come.
And every time I see and touch it, I remember I made it. And I get a small thrill because of how lovely this little thing is, and sense of control and mastery over the world that makes my life better.
I've made a great deal of what I see and touch daily. If you want to do that, get a friend to show you or watch YouTube videos.
Vastly underrated way to thrive in the world.
