2027 will be interesting, perhaps a bit of both
There are only 130 US tech companies, public or private, valued at $10B or more (decacorns). That’s roughly 20 to 30 new companies per decade, for the last five decades. This year alone, with a quarter to go, there have been 42 decacorns minted privately. Either this is the most economically transformative event since the industrial revolution, or we’re getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves.
so much this.
and it also frees up talent.

Munich & Zurich, watch out 👀
We are teaming up with Modal for 2 physical AI meetups in Europe's most important physical AI hubs ‼️
04.11 - Munich, hosted at Tacto and with talks/demo's from Rerun & SE3 Labs + support from our friends at roboTUM
05.11 - Zurich, hosted at J floor and with talks/demo's from Cerrion & Rerun
Expect deeply technical lightning talks & demos + good conversations with other engineers, founders & researchers.
We have 1 more demo slot per city; what's the coolest project to showcase?
Applications are now open!

career-defining opportunity at a gc-backed defence company in europe, looking for a business operations & strategy lead.
must have:
a) 5+ years in an analytical role in a high-growth environment, driving outcomes and not slide decks
b) a track record of owning initiatives end to end
c) the ability to get into the weeds with specialists in domains you’ve never touched

Counter argument: Not only is taste subjective, it's a moving target. As soon as [tasteful thing] becomes easily replicable, it stops being tasteful.
Taste is a status game with a strong defensibility mechanism. That's why the term is so fuzzy and ill-defined. Vagueness is the whole point. It's meant to be hard to copy.

We had the honor of hosting an @esa delegation in Warsaw, led by ESA Director General Dr. Josef Aschbacher.
During the meeting, we presented our plans for expanding the constellation and the Satellite Technology Center in Warsaw, where we develop technologies for the next generations of our satellites.
Thank you for the visit, the open discussion and the interest in what we are building in Poland. We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with ESA to develop and strengthen the capabilities of the European space sector.

great + thoughtful analysis, from the venture team that (imo) has the most comprehensive vision for what it is to believe in Europe
the GCI team @generalcatalyst just published our Accelerating European Innovation through Public Procurement paper.
Procurement reform is the most important but underused scale up lever. get it right and it has much bigger impact than small grants or initiatives. The European scale up fund is 5B. Even shifting 1% of public demand to scale up would be 25B - and distributed on merit.

super excited for tomorrow and to spend more time in poland again
excited to be in warsaw next week and host our next @generalcatalyst resilience table during the warsaw security forum with our friends from zeus faber

Some jobs shouldn't have a human in them at all! ⚠️
I visited @mnv_humanoids in Stuttgart, who are building humanoids for hazardous industrial and public safety work.
Yesterday they came out of stealth with a ~$10M pre-seed round led by @generalcatalyst, with @LongJourneyVC and @CredoVentures as co-leads.
The founders know the category well. CEO @SandorFelber helped launch MIT CSAIL humanoid research line and worked on Tesla Optimus. CTO Maurice Rahme spent six years at Boston Dynamics as one of the technical leads on Stretch. Together they went from an idea to a walking humanoid in five months.
Yeah, in 5 months!!! 🤯
One of their examples is the render-safe procedure on an unknown drone at an airport.
Today that means a human in a bomb suit walking toward an object nobody has identified yet. Minerva says their robot, Roger, completes the procedure much faster than any existing method.
For a warehouse you can redesign the building around the robot, and plenty of companies do exactly that. A refinery cannot be redesigned. Neither can an offshore platform or an airport apron. The ladders, stairs, hatches, valve wheels and hand tools are already there, built around the human body, and retrofitting them costs more than the automation. So the robot fits the environment instead.
The control architecture splits the work between human and AI. An operator works from a safe distance, potentially from home, while Minerva Intelligence handles balance, locomotion and manipulation assistance underneath. The human keeps the judgement and the domain expertise, but the robot takes the risk.
And every session an operator runs generates training data, so the AI can support them more reliably over time and gradually take on more of the task.
→ Hardware built in Germany, AI and software developed in the Bay Area
→ Teleoperation now, with autonomy increasing as the data accumulates
→ First paid pilots start this fall
Put the machine in danger, not the person. That's the whole product.
What a time to be a robotics guy these days! 😮💨

it’s hard to invest in physical companies that are not complex
also, companies that compound are just complex in nature
