Hey look I got a new temp job @harperbooks writing a book about how American democracy died in the workplace!
My car got stolen in Brooklyn in 2024 and when I went to the police station to report it (a mistake, I know) the police ran my plates and scolded me for not immediately coming to the station because their license plate know where every car is in the city.

We should not be giving the NYPD—a department that already spends millions on surveillance—another tool that will allow them to conduct mass surveillance of New Yorkers. 1/
It's not surprising to learn Malcolm Gladwell elide and fabricate facts in favor of increased policing in his new book but if you are thinking of buying into the pundits insisting on a rightward drift on policing, you'd do well to read this. equalityalec.substack.com/p/… @equalityAlec

Across the country, recent conversions of public housing have led to too many bad renovations and failed relocations to ignore. In NYC, independent analysis finds that private management has increased eviction rates and created poor living conditions for many tenants.

This is really a story about the future of democracy in America, and how much people want democracy and to have some control over their homes and lives.
A tenacious group of tenants is fighting a teardown plan in one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods that could spell the end of public housing as we know it? I wrote for @newrepublic about their struggle and the fate of government-run homes in the US.
Take some time to read this impressive, thorough report by @mfriedrichnyc on the privatization of NYCHA and the last dying gasp of the New Deal

Interesting #take as one of the core tenets of Chicago School economics (and law) is that power is “not an economic concept” and therefore should not be incorporated into economic models.

This autopsy of how corporate ownership killed a magazine for political reasons really begs the question about whether it is possible to do journalism with corporate ownership.

It's really odd that anyone is surprised that Gen Z people express a certain hopelessness in their expectations for their lives when everyone older have been insisting that a better world (one with healthcare, say) is impossible and bleating about how doomed we all are.
Private equity pushing autism providers to increase the number of hours kids get care. Even when they clearly need a nap. We have a horrible health care system in this country.

Bloomberg gets named (correctly) by @michelleinbklyn for ushering in a choice-oriented high school system but it was de Blasio who later wiped away remaining vestiges of local zoning in the name of equity. Leading to more inequity. nytimes.com/2026/10/19/opini…
