#bbcbreakfast Brexit has not been “reopened because of Andy Burnham”, but because: - it’s turned out to be a costly mistake - geopolitics shows we can’t rely on the US, but need to work with our neighbours with whom we share common interests - the public has turned against it

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced five "everyday fixes" ahead of the Budget 1. Carer's Allowance will be changed so carers no longer lose their entire benefit when they earn over the limit - instead, their support will reduce by £1 for every extra £1 they earn 2. Import tariffs will be removed on more than 100 products, including baked beans, chocolate and gherkins, to save households up to £21 on their food shop a year 3. Tax-free mileage rates for workers using their own cars will be made permanent at 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, with the rate for additional miles rising from 25p to 35p 4. Parental pay will be extended to over 150,000 more parents a year, including self-employed fathers and partners 5. Hundreds more Post Office drop boxes will be rolled out to save people queueing at branches

The main reason not to trust Russians, explained by Harry Truman. “Do you trust the Russians?” “No. Period.” “Why?” “Because they broke every agreement they ever made with me.”

Farage has really fallen from grace. No good answer under the slightest bit of scrutiny and as with his hero Trump, his default is to then get snappy with a female journalist.

Only Trump can save Putin. Europe should have stepped up support and weapons production long ago, and with urgency as soon as Trump was reelected. Whatever they need to spend now to defend Ukraine is a pittance compared to what they would be forced to spend if Putin advances.
"Nor are Europeans quitting on Ukraine. Although Putin hoped that the withdrawal of American military and economic aid early in Trump’s second term would lead to a quick Ukrainian collapse or capitulation, he did not anticipate how willing and capable European countries would be in filling the American void." foreignaffairs.com/russia/pu…

🇬🇧🇪🇺 We are reversing Brexit. The UK and EU are working on British access to “Made in Europe”. A special agreement is expected to be discussed at the November summit. An interim deal could pave the way for future UK membership of the European Union. UK–EU relations are closer than at any point since Brexit With the prospect of reversing its economic and political consequences now within reach.

It's pretty insane how there's a right-wing discourse in the United States that London is collapsing and unsafe. Crossrail alone feels like Star Trek compared to anything in New York. The London Underground has been modernized. Street infrastructure is better. And there's significantly less gun violence.
Real legacy achievement this and Khan deserves real kudos for cutting through everything to get here.

Brexit only has "wounds" because it's so plainly negative. If it were positive (in the real world, not 14m fantasy versions), Remainers would be happy to have a genuine debate.

Yawn. You hide behind legalism. I'm talking diplomacy. Even Michel Barnier has said Britain could negotiate its old opt-outs. You're so obsessed with the letter of the law you've completely missed the spirit. I'm explaining how the game is actually played. Think bigger.

£72 MILLION in donations. A vast media operation. And still they can’t fill the room. Farage blamed “staff incompetence”. Sometimes the camera tells you more than the speech. 👀
I’m not sure I’ve seen a Nigel Farage press conference quite this empty

Do not look away--this is what the USA is doing to help Putin.
On Oct. 19, a Russian strike on a Kharkiv park killed five people, including a 1-year-old girl. @CBSNews obtained photos showing air-defense radars offline that day due to SpaceX’s Starlink restrictions. Alina Spichak walked me through the last steps of her sister Yulia, who died there.

Simon's right. Literally every European state is more devolved and decentralised that Britain.
What a silly argument. Federal states like Germany and Spain have far greater degrees of devolution inside the EU than highly centralised Britain does outside

Knew you'd say this. Who said anything about ignoring rules? You're confusing two very different things. The EU can be politically flexible about how nations integrate: opt-outs, derogations, transition periods, even the euro. But the Single Market is different. Its common rules must be enforced rigorously. Without them, there can be no level playing field. Flexibility over the terms of membership. Rigour over the obligations of participation. That's not breaking the rules. It's understanding what the rules are FOR. The EU is a political union, not a theological cult devoted to legal literalism.
