On the 40th anniversary of the historic Day of Prayer for Peace, convened by Pope John Paul II on October 27, 1986, the legacy of the “Spirit of Assisi” spans four pontificates. From John Paul II himself, who explored its theological significance, to Benedict XVI, who extended the dialogue to include non-believers; from Francis, who called for fraternity, to Pope Leo XIV, who invites religions to rediscover within their own roots an antidote to hatred and violence.

Lest anyone forgot/was too stunned to grasp it in the moment, Leo’s Election Day slip into Spanish “to [greet] my beloved Diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru” was the first time a new Pope left Italian in his opening word to the world.

I am looking forward to returning to the continent where I’ve experienced so many moments of my life. May this journey be an occasion for us to open our hearts to one another, strengthen our communion as brothers and sisters, and renew our commitment to proclaiming the Gospel with joy. #Uruguay #Argentina #Peru

Pope Leo XIV will not make his scheduled visit to Assisi on October 27 in order to “aid his recovery” following his recent thoracic surgery, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The Pope will instead send a message to express his closeness to the organizers and attendees of the “Unarmed and Disarming Peace” meeting, which marks the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened in the Italian city by Pope St. John Paul II.
“To aid his recovery following the thoracic surgery he underwent on Tuesday of last week, Pope Leo XIV will be unable to attend the ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’ meeting in Assisi on October 27, as planned,” read the statement.
The Press Office assured everyone that the Holy Father remains convinced “that the ‘Spirit of Assisi’ dialogue and the search for words and gestures of peace are valuable resources in an age of conflict.”
At the same time, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said the Holy Father underwent a scheduled follow-up chest X-ray, which confirmed that his “postoperative recovery is progressing very well.”
“However, given the short time that has elapsed since the surgery, his doctors advised against the planned helicopter journey on October 27 as a precaution,” they noted in the statement released on Friday by the Holy See Press Office.

This is precisely what it means to “give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s”: to be truthful, free from servile fear or hypocrisy, free to do good. Let us pray to the Lord to help us live in this way. #GospelOfTheDay (Mt 22:15-21)
Striking as it was, today's Oval fiasco is all the more extraordinary given the feast at hand...

An archdiocese spokeswoman said: "Archbishop Grob was among a group of bishops who had a brief meeting with the president today."

Pope Leo welcomed members of the American Jewish Committee in the Vatican this morning and recalled their shared commitment to promoting human dignity and to rejecting all forms of hatred and discrimination.
Long story short: “Pope Cancer-Free.”

Pope Leo XIV’s doctors have confirmed that the tumor removed on October 13 was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized.
Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said on Wednesday evening that a subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that “no further treatment is necessary.”
